2000-2020... 1 album per year*

This thread is not to discuss whether the 21st century started in 2000 or 2001…it’s to vote for your 20 favorite albums released from January 1st 2001 up until December 31st 2020.

No need to chose one album for each year, i.e. many albums for the same year is fine, but please keep the list down to 20. No order of preference (or other) is necessary: it’s hard enough to have to chose only 20.

If there is enough interest I’ll put together stats => each album will get one vote.

    My list

Anekdoten - A time of day

    Echolyn - Echolyn (2012)

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Yanqui U.X.O

    Jane's addiction - Strays

King Crimson - The power to believe

    Massive Attack - 100th window

Muse - Black holes and revelations

    Naikaku - Shell

Nine inch nails - Hesitation marks

    Pez - Folklore

    Phish - Fuego

Porcupine Tree - Fear of a blank planet

    Radiohead - In rainbows

    Rush - Clockwork angels

    Steven Wilson - Hand.Cannot.Erase

    Arcade Fire - Funeral

The Claypool Lennon Delirium - South of reality

    The Mars Volta - Nocturniquet

    Tool - Lateralus

UNKLE - Where did the night fall

I had to leave out albums I love, but didn’t want to start off by bending my own rules…

I am going to do this somewhat randomly, as I have, surprisingly even to me, many many albums that I think are on par with anything released in my (probably) favourite period, the seventies.

Decemberists - The Hazards Of Love - 2009
A wonderful album that is based around a fable of sorts I suppose. It has elements of folk, and progressive and hard rock, and it all blends beautifully into a thematic album, that for me works incredibly well

Raconteurs - Consolers of The Lonely - 2008
From the very first song, you get the feeling that these guys were inspired. I would just call this rock music, but it probably has some kind of alternative tag or something.
Essentially just a great batch of songs, that are played with an exuberance and fire to really bring them home.

    Devin Townsend - Empath - 2019
I am not someone that likes screamo, or Death metal vocals .... they kind of make me laugh to be honest, but Devin Townsend's solo career, for me is full of excellent music, and vocals that are full of melodic beauty and then used almost like an emphasis point we get some, incredibly controlled fry singing (that rasp of sounding like shouting) that retains the all important melody and balanced delivery.
I could pick a lot of Townsend's album, but for me, Devin's 2019 release Empath is like an accumulation of everything he had tried before (to a degree) and creates a quite unique album that works essentially like an emotional journey. We have beautiful ballad type songs, epic journey's in music, we have every kind of genre type influence one could imagine, and it all comes together remarkably well, to create one of the best albums of the decade ... ana lbum that deserves consideration when compiling best of all time lists. Do yourself a favour and listen to the 5.1 version of the album, if 5 speakers isn't an offence to you :)

Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds ..... 2004-2019
I am really unsure which to put forward here as the pinnacle, because they are all so different, and they are all quite phenomenal to me.
Abattoir Blues/Lyre Of Orpheus - 2004 is a remarkable album that infuses gospel, rock, atmospherics and Nick's own brand of lyricism in a wonderful package of tracks.
Push the Sky Away - 2013 is an album of beauty with sometimes wandering narratives that really will entrance anyone that is able to get into the groove of it.
Skeleton Tree - 2016 is an album that really split the pack. It is like an ambient, atmospheric series of almost poetic recital, that takes a lot of pain, and tries to put it where we can deal with it. I love it.

    Transatlantic - Whirlwind - 2009
Some folks don't really like the Christian tilt of some of the lyrics, but this is an incredible piece of work..... it is like a 77 minute song, or musical thought, even though it is made up of separate tracks. For me it is an album that deserves a lot of recognition for how good it is. Bridge Across Forever from 2001 is also extremely good, and many like it more. Listen to Suite Charlotte Pike for a reference of what to expect on the Bridge album.

    Pineapple thief - Dissolution - 2018
A really new band and album to me, and I thought this was great. As I say, I am really new to these guys, but I liked this an awful lot, and it is also a really great listen in 5.1

Porcupine Tree - Fear Of A Blank Planet - 2007
This is another fantastic album. It incorporates elements of progressive rock, and throws in some excellent hard rock edges. It has a great balance of light and shade and I think the writing and execution is excellent.

Steven Wilson - Hand Cannot Erase - 2015
This album is quite spectacular.... again I am very new to this album, but it instantly grabbed me, and it is an incredible piece of work. Again the 5.1 mix is quite stunning.

    Brandi Carlisle - The Story - 2007
The title track is what drew me into this album, and Brandi in general. Here we have a kind of folk/rock/country type album. This album is much more than a one song stand out. Brandi and the twins work together to create an excellent album with a lot of different feels and Brandi puts that wonderful, beautiful and rawkus voice to great use here.

Iron Maiden - Books Of Souls - 2015
A lot of folks don't really rate Iron Maiden... it seems in many circle they are considered somewhat like Kiss, as music for prepubescent boys or something.... I think that is a pretty misdirected insult to the band and their fans really.
This album split a few folks down the middle. some folks, like me, find it to be a wonderful and diverse batch of songs... others find it a bit drawn out, and over long. Personally I find it pretty much engrossing from start to finish.
I was torn between this album and A Matter Of Life And Death. Many people think the band only did anything of any value in the eighties, but I think I may prefer the 21st century edition of the band more to be honest.

    Muse - Origin Of Symmetry - 2001
These guys seem to cop a lot of flak ... Idk sell outs, boring or whatever... same old story really, a band gets popular, and so folks write them off, because they just aren't cool anymore lol.
This is an undeniably great album. I like most of the bands albums, up to and including 2nd Law, but for me, yea, lost a bit of interest around the Drones album. That doesn't change the fact that Origin is an essential album though.

    Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake It's Morning - 2005
This is an excellent album. It is probably a little bit of a downer for some folks, but I think it actually has much more to it than that. A kind of alternate folk type thing with an interesting perspective from an interesting writer.
I also this Lifted, Or, The Story Is In The Soil is well worth a listen to.

    Wilco - The Whole Love - 2011
Most people will probably lean you towards Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, or a Ghost Is Born, but I personally would lean you towards Sky Blue Sky or this album, and it was a real toss up which I was going to put down here.
These guys are excellent, and really deserve considering when albums of the 21st century come into the conversation. for the record Being There and Summerteeth are probably my favourite Wilco albums, released just prior to the time guidelines here.

Dream Theater - Distance Over Time - 2019
There are a lot of Dream theater fans that will disagree with me here.... probably Octavarium or Systematic Chaos would get the vote. for me this is just such a striking album, and last year I really took a liking to it, and purchased the other Dream Theater albums. I had enjoyed Octavarium back when it was released, but never really followed up. this album drew me in.
    Excellent band.

    Bjork - Vespertine - 2001
I suppose Bjork is an acquired taste, but I think she is great. I am not sure if this is my favourite album of hers, but it is certainly one that deserves a hearing.

Not twenty, but I am running out of time. I reckon they are all albums worth giving a listen.... unless some are outside your stylistic taste

The other thread mentioned, a year at a time, I put this stuff
2000 PJ Harvey - Stories From The City Stories From The Sea
2001 Muse - Origin Of Symmetry
2002 Bright Eyes - Lifted or The Story Is In the Soil
2003 Dido - Life For Rent
2004 Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds - Abattoir Blues/ Lyre Of Orpheus
    2005 Dream Theater - Octavarium
2006 Iron Maiden - A Matter Of Life And Death, a really close almost impossible split for me with The Church - Uninvited Like The Clouds, and Devin Townsend Band Synchestra
2007 Porcupine Tree - Fear Of A Blank Planet, again a really close toss up with Alison Krauss and Robert Plant Raising Sand and Wilco Sky Blue Sky
2008 Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely
2009 Decemberists - Hazards of Love, slightly ahead of Devin Townsend Addicted and Transatlantic Whirlwind
    2010 Grinderman 2
2011 Wilco - The Whole Love
    2012 Devin Townsend - Epicloud
2013 Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds - Push The Sky Away
2014 The Church - Further Deeper , closely followed by Devin Townsend Z2
2015 Steven Wilson - Hand Cannot Erase , a tight call with Iron Maiden The Books Of Souls
2016 Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds - Skeleton Tree
2017 Phoebe Bridgers - Stranger in The Alps
    2018 Pineapple Thief - Dissolution
2019 Devin Townsend - Empath, but what a great year with Nick Cave - Ghosteen, Joe Jackson - The Fool, Rival Sons - Feral Roots.

It was dumb to merge these threads, as it was two completely different questions - 1 album per year for 20 years vs top 20 albums over 20 years. Can people really not get the difference?

Anyway, here was my answer to the second question before that thread incorrectly was merged to this one:

As with all lists of this sort, if I were to compile it next week, many of these would most likely be different.

I also left contemporary classical off my list, since it would have made these choices even more difficult.

2001 - Koenji Hyakkei - Nivraym / Japanese Zeuhl band actually beat out (for me), the originators of this subgenre, Magma for 2001.
2002 - Deus Ex Machina - Cinque / Italian prog-fusion (with some minor avant leanings), with the incredible 5 octave voice of Alberto Piras.
2003 - Thinking Plague - A History of Madness / From the USA. One of the best avant-prog (RIO) bands ever. Dissonant and not always an easy listen, but amazing, if one is a bit adventurous.
2004 - Magma - KA / The inventors of the Zeuhl subgenre of prog are back to their 70's brilliance with this release.
2005 - Nil - Nil Novo Sub Sole / Extremely well played, dark Crimsonish prog from France.
2006 - Alex Machacek - [sic] / Holdsworth inspired guitarist from Austria, Machacek, plays some Zappa influenced fusion. Very complex, yet still tuneful.
    2007 - Hiromi Uehara -Time Control /
2008 - DFA - 4th / Italian prog-fusion at its best. Great melodies abound, with always tasteful playing.
2009 - Diablo Swing Orchestra - Sing Along Songs for the Damned and Delirious / OK, in all honesty there are better albums in 2009, but this one is just so much fun, I had to go with it. Metal, meets big band swing, with operatic female vocals.
2010 - Univers Zero - Clivages / Belgian avant-prog masters, still turning out contemporary classical inspired brilliant releases after 4 decades.
2011 - Ske - 1000 Autunni / Italian prog that has influences from Italian bands of the 70's, with some chamber and avant touches. Lots of great instrumentation (sax, flute, violin, Theramin, harp, etc) by this 15 member ensemble.
2012 - Magma - Félicité Thösz / Yet another example of the otherworldly beauty, and soaring melodies Magma is capable of. An acquired taste, I know, but so worth it.
2013 - Steve Wilson - The Raven That Refused to Sing / Unapologetic 70's influenced prog. So much great playing, great (dark and haunting) melodies, sad and touching lyrics.
2014 - Ed Palermo Big Band - Oh No! Not Jazz!! / Incredible big band jazz-fusion versions of Frank Zappa songs. "Inca Roads" includes Napoleon Murphy Brock.
2015 - Ghost Rhythms - Madeleine / Hard to classify 10 piece band from France. Jazz, chamber- prog, avant-prog.
2016 - Panzerpappa - Pestrottedans / Norwegian jazz-fusion, with some Canterbury influences. Kind of playful and, despite serious musicianship, don't take themselves too seriously.
2017 - Kotebel - Cosmology / The best prog band from Spain. Virtuosic playing by all musicians, with Adriana Plaza on piano being the standout.
2018 - All Traps on Earth - A Drop of Light / Proves that Sweden is still turning out great prog. Darkly beautiful and haunting melodies abound.
2019 - Magma - Zëss / Seems like I can't keep this band out of my best of the year ratings.
2020 - Manna/Mirage - Face / Canterbury jazz-fusion-prog from the USA. Pretty creative stuff, this.

I'm playing. I had fun with this. VERY challenging in that there have been tons of releases that I loved for the past 20 years. Some years were easier to pick than others. 2002, 2003, 2011, 2012 were very hard to choose from.

To make it even more challenging, I am not picking compilations, best-ofs, live albums, box sets, reissues, or gimmick albums (all covers songs, etc...)

Here are my picks. Hopefully people with the same tastes will seek out some of my more obscure albums and get turned on.

    2000: Flogging Molly - Swagger
2001: Slayer – God Hates Us All
2002: The Donnas – Spend The Night
2003: tie The Wildhearts – The Wildhearts Must Be Destroyed tied with The Darkness – Permission To Land
2004: Green Day – American Idiot
    2005: Turbonegro – Party Animals
    2006: Slayer – Christ Illusion
2007: The Queers – Munki Brain
    2008: Metallica – Death Magnetic
2009: tie The Wildhearts – Chutzpah! Tied with Ace Frehley – Anomoly
2010: Bongripper – Satan Worshipping Doom
2011: Michael Monroe – Sensory Overdrive
2012: Redd Kross – Researching The Blues
    2013: Black Sabbath – 13

    Really difficult this.

It feels wrong that I've not been able to include Beck, but, to my mind, YHF just about beats Sea Change. And it is just plain wrong that Bright Eyes have to wait until 2020 before they get a mention, given that they were my band of the early part of the century, but, again, YHF beats out Lifted (on this given day, through a particular slant of light), and I'd struggle to divide Digital Ash from I'm Wide Awake, and so 2005 goes to Demon Days. And, finally, I'm gutted that there was no room for Sharon Van Etten's Remind Me Tomorrow, but NFR is just something else and very difficult to beat in that year or any (in my view).

I found 2009 and 2018 the most difficult years. Nothing really stood out to me as being exceptional. I like both the choices here well enough, but they don't quite stand up against the entries against other years (imo). I'll be checking out other contributions in interest to see what I might have missed.

    2000: Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker
2001: Gillian Welch - Time (the Revelator)
2002: Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
2003: The White Stripes - Elephant
2004: Rilo Kiley - More Adventurous
    2005: Gorillaz - Demon Days
2006: Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins - Rabbit Fur Coat
2007: Willy Mason - If the Ocean Gets Rough
2008: The Raconteurs - Consolers Of The Lonely
2009: Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit - Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit
2010: Cherry Ghost - Beneath This Burning Shoreline
2011: Gillian Welch - The Harrow and the Harvest
    2012: M. Ward - A Wasteland Companion
    2013: Lorde - Heroine
2014: Conor Oberst - Upside Down Mountain
2015: Father John Misty - I Love You, Honeybear
    2016: Big Thief - Masterpiece
2017: Father John Misty - Pure Comedy
    2018: Adrianne Lenker - Abysskiss
2019: Lana Del Rey - NFR!
2020: Bright Eyes - Down in the Weeds Where the World Once Was

In this forum? Yes, they can't. I'm surprised people haven't just ranked all the Beatles albums in this thread.

The merging of these threads is a little wonky. Some folks picking one album per year, and some folks just picking their preferred albums from the decade ... it is subtle, but there ends up being quite a difference in results
