Of these, Radiohead gets my nod. The Paul Simon album is surprisingly compelling as well.

I've always been a huge fan of Teenage Fanclub and agree with this. But Fanclub have always been much loved and respected by journalists. It's not their best album but I like to see any positivity towards Teenage Fanclub. Especially if it leads to a vinyl or deluxe edition reissue campaign for them!

I changed my mind from the Mojo poll, just because it would be ridiculous to do so.

  6. "Schmilco" by Wilco got my vote, but honestly I loved "Stranger To Stranger" by Paul Simon just as much (Wilco just had less votes, so that's how I broke the tie)

Honorable Mention to... Leonard Cohen & David Bowie...

Blimey I have 7 of these and I thought I was hopelessly stuck in the past.

  8. In the Uncut list Radiohead has a higher rating from both critics and listeners than Bowie yet is listed behind it.Please explain.

AOTY are showing two things: Uncut's own ranking (which I polled here) and an overall ranking based on several other publications (not polled here).

Very surprised that Suede's 'Night Thoughts' isn't in the Top 75. It's up with their best albums (the first two) and would appeal to the age group of readers (and writers).

    Anyway, Blackstar no.1 for me.

Those lists just prove to me how out of touch I am with new releases. The only one I've heard was Leonard Cohen. The best album I've heard this year, not on either list, is William Bell:This Is Where I Live

It's Felix It's not really me

    A single vote for Eno.

As dull a list as Mojo's. Where are all the great Erased Tapes releases?

Also no Dinosaur Jr. PJ Harvey is never top ten with that hotchpotch of a release.

Radiohead is probably the best. Skeleton Tree is very good, but the songs feel a bit lightweight for longevity.

I love the Bowie record but wonder if it would have topped the list if he were still around.

Part of its charm is that he's singing about his own imminent death.

I haven't heard any in full. I heard the title track to Leonard Cohen's and liked it.

I voted Solange from this list but you're right, this list doesn't even scratch the surface of the best music released this year.

Out of what's on that list, I've heard half. Another quarter, I've never heard anything by those artists that I've liked so I didn't bother checking out. I only own one on the list, Radiohead, so that's what I voted for.

This is a record that every fan of The Grateful Dead, Tim Buckley or Van Morrison should check out.

Steve Gunn's Eyes on the Lines deserves some serious consideration. If you like Television, Dire Straits, and maybe a dash of Grateful Dead, check it out. Song Ancient Jules is a killer.

another bunch of consensus-favorite albums, the ordering may as well be arbitrary. unfortunately, there are dozens of samey year-end lists.

Nice to see Bowie at No. 1, Nick Cave at No.3 and Cohen at No. 4, but Iggy Pop should be in a higher position than No. 25 and as far as I'm concerned there's one heck of a lot of dreck on that list.
