Good news! I've held off picking this up on DVD because it is so stripped down, so I'm looking forward to getting this. Hopefully, Best Buy or Circuit City will throw it on sale the first week.

 

Lets hope that Prince got involved with the reissue... now that he has a friendlier diposition towards WB.

Boy, that movie was huge. The music dominated the airwaves and MTV.

Hope they have some unreleased Morris Day scenes!

 

So do I, Ron, if only because Morris and Jerome were the best actors in the film! Clarence Williams III was wasted--had almost nothing to do except act violent, and not for long, at that--while the rest....let's just say you can probably still find better acting chops in most porn films....

What I'm praying for is the proper letterboxing, and real 5.1 sound....

 

Amen. PR was one of the first DVD's I ever bought, back in '99, and I was MIGHTILY disappointed that it's only been available in full-frame and PCM.

At least Prince found a leading lady to match his acting skills in Appolonia.

I think anyone would be happy to be 1/10th the musician Prince is, but as an actor...

I think Weird Al put it best when he said something like his own movie would be like Purple Rain...only intentionally funny.

 

It is nice to see all the videos included including the non-Prince songs. I have to wonder if they'll use the entire "I Would Die 4 U / Baby I'm A Star" clip or an edited version. IIRC, the video was a live version running several minutes.

Cool, pretty much what I expected... sucks about the lack of deleted scenes, but I'll live.

 

From that review, it does sound like something we can live with...

Visually, it was filmed on the cheap, something that shows,and the grainy or dark passages were inherent to it...but what we really enjoy are the music/concert sequences....the plot is useless and I agree, the misogyny was tiring the first time I saw it; doesn't get any easier to take with repeated viewings.

As for the sound, while 5.1 music would have been nice, I do like the idea of the music up front and the crowd behind, provided they isolated properly and it doesn't come off as unnatural.

 

The review mentioned a remastered soundtrack CD. Did I miss something?

 

Who knows - the sentence in question actually makes little sense:

"Truth be told, the music still sounds like it is in stereo and is comparable to recently soundtrack CD remaster."

That's English, but I don't understand it. It does imply that there's a remastered "Purple Rain" CD out there, I guess, but that's just nonsense since none exists.

I never put too much stock in what Peter Bracke writes - he makes WAY too many mistakes, and not just slips like "For Michael Jackson, it was when he first moonwalked on the Motown 50th Anniversary Show." He often makes such enormous mistakes that it becomes obvious he never actually watched the DVD. Heck, I know of instances in which he wrote reviews of DVDs he didn't even have! Take anything he writes with a grain of salt.

The grammar and spelling in that review were so poor, I wouldn't even take him with a grain of salt! It's one of the few times I've wanted to write someone and tell them just how much they suck at what they do.

 

I agree with what you said, but to me, that's part of the charm.

 

Bracke's really not a poor writer - he's just sloppy. He's the king of the hill, as DVD File is definitely the most successful DVD site, and since he knows he can get away with mistakes and blatant fiction, he doesn't care. This'll sound like sour grapes, but it honestly drives me nuts that I try as hard as I can to represent DVDs accurately in my reviews but someone who treats his audience with such contempt gets many more hits than our site will ever achieve...
