Philadelphia was released on this day, January 14 in 1994. I was 15 years old at the time and saw it in my local theatre. The film was the first Hollywood big-budget, big-star film to tackle the issue of AIDS in the U.S. It had quite the effect on me. Two songs from the movie were nominated for Best Original Song, "Philadelphia" by Neil Young and "Streets of Philadelphia" by Bruce Springsteen which won. Is that the first time two songs from the same movie get nominated?
Neil's song is so sad I can barely listen to it. Peeved that Bruce beat him, although I like his song too. I remember it as a good film, though I haven't seen it in ages. Great role for Hanks to show off his stuff. Jason Robards masterful as always.
Amazed in a good way that I saw this with friends in the theater during high school. Early to mid 90s Tom Hanks career alone would be one hell of a career.
The office scenes were filmed in the office I was working in at the time, and I became friendly with some of the techies. I went to see Television during the shooting period and sitting in the seat right behind me was one of the techies!
This one holds a special place for me in my heart. My father is an extra in the courtroom scenes behind Jason Robards. He always had extra parts in all the locally filmed movies and loved to talk about the process and the people involved, especially if the stars took the time to speak with the extras.
No, and coincidentally enough The Bodyguard also had two song nominations that same year. Others are Fame, Flashdance and Footloose. There were a couple of animated Disney movies as well.
