3 Classic Neil Young Albums?

  1. Every single one of my favorite Neil Young songs come from a weird album (that's otherwise arguably hit-n-miss), and/or from an album with weird origins. Just a few examples, off the top of my head:
    • "Sample and Hold" and "Computer Age" from Trans -- but *especially* the various LIVE versions of those tunes (all from the 80's).
    • "Ordinary People" from Chrome Dreams II
    • "Grey Riders" from A Treasure.
    • A song or two from Re·ac·tor.
    • Two or three songs from Landing on Water.
    • A song or two from Life.
And certainly a bunch from Freedom, Ragged Glory, Sleeps With Angels -- though great as those 3 albums are, few of those tunes quite reach the heights of the four (4) that I specifically mentioned above.

And I've never gotten too deeply into any Neil pre-Re·ac·tor, if you can imagine.

So with an interest in Neil as outlined above, I'm really not sure how to answer an "album-centric" question, such as the OP posed in this thread.

I love this tune as well... the first version I ever heard was a bootleg, late at night on a radio station in San Luis Obispo. I have no idea if the performance I heard is the one that got released on Chrome Dreams II or not!!

After The Gold Rush - excellent early effort with his most consistent set of songs.
On The Beach - my favourite of the ditch trilogy - chilled out resignation on the second side, 'See The Sky About To Rain' is beautiful and 'Revolution Blues' rocks.
Rust Never Sleeps - great bookend to the 1970s, with a reaction to punk and a lovely acoustic half.
