Could do this in so many ways:

3 classics: Harvest, Goldrush, Harvest Moon

3 difficult ones: the Ditch Trilogy

3 comeback albums: Freedom, Ragged Glory, Sleeps with Angels

3 country ones: Comes a time, Old Ways, Prairie Wind

    and the:

3 really good ones: On the Beach, American Stars 'n Bars, Rust Never Sleeps,

So true, Neil was utterly in a league of his own in this period as we know.... in front of everyone, i think...At least as a solo artist....setting impossible standards and establishing new criteria....

I would imagine Neil Young‘s own pick of his music would be
    Buffalo Springfield
    Debut album 1968
    Rust Never Sleeps.

My Second Round (I have to throw it in now for some reason) would be:

Tonight's The Night (that lp has very good audiophile sound btw, I think.. even the CD that came out in 1990)
    Zuma
    Harvest

I like them about as much as the first round I picked out ...

I love the old stuff too, obviously can't deny EKTIN, Harvest and Zuma, but speaking as a child of the '90s, my favorites are:

    Freedom
    Ragged Glory
    Mirror Ball
    Broken Arrow

(Darn, forgot how to count to three! ; )
