Two sets of three (albums placed in order of importance):

    Set One

1 - Tonight's The Night, rc. 73/rl. 75--Shakey's magnum opus. He will never top the dark, gritty, despairing, and haunting brilliance of this album; too bad it took Reprise two years to permit him to release it. An album buried in the marrow.
2 - On The Beach, 74--My "1B" to the above. He was on a roll in 73/74 despite his personal struggles, and his guitar playing was cool beyond words ("Vampire Blues," "Eponymous," and "Ambulance Blues" for proof). LOVE the hazy, narcotic vibe on this album.
3 - Everybody Knows This is Nowhere, 69--The prototype for grunge; the tandem of Shakey and Danny Whitten on the epics like "Down By The River," and "Cowgirl in the Sand" are the stuff of legend. Whitten's like a machine on rhythm.

The above three are my "Desert Island Discs"--if I can only be limited to three Shakey albums, these would be the ones.

    Set Two

1 - After The Gold Rush, 70--Love the patchwork feel to this album; he put out some of his most endearing ballads with "Tell Me Why" and the "Eponymous" track. Beautiful cover of Don Gibson's "Oh, Lonesome Me."
2 - Time Fades Away, 73--Considered the first album in the highly regarded Ditch Trilogy. Worthy of a spot in one's personal archive simply for "Don't Be Denied" and "Yonder Stands The Sinner." Very glad he's warmed to this in recent years.
3 - Harvest, 72--I like to say Side Two of this album is the true beginning of The Ditch Period--"Are You Ready For The Country?," "Alabama," and "Words..." were a foreshadowing of what was around the corner in 72/73.
