So today 40 years ago one of the great heroes of music sadly decided to take his life. Let's remember and honor Ian, please tell us what you think about the music and the influence he and Joy Division have had on the music scene.
First heard Unknown Pleasures when it was released and thought it sounded like bad heavy metal. Wasn't until mid 80's that I finally got and got into Joy Division and their bleak textures. One of my fave bands.
"Without" Ian Curtis? I'd say he was pretty present over the last 40 years. Gazing from magazines, his voice coming out of speakers, his spectre flickering across screens. Signs of JD everywhere. And on totebags! Only he didn't age. Unlike his bandmates. Or the middle-aged men that still are trying to make sense of his lyrics. I guess he will be with (some of) us forever!
Great two albums, especially "Closer" and some fantastic non-album tracks complied later on. The glorification of death I can frankly pass on though.
The man and his legacy will live on for all time, Ian Curtis and his music/lyrics will be remembered for generations to come.
I first saw Ian when the band were called Warsaw. I remember one gig (Student's Union, Cavendish House, Manchester Polythechnic) where he was wearing a very punky, black bondage outfit. He didn't look comfortable and the music the band made was very unremarkable. Then after JD's brilliant Ideal For Living EP and the new Kraftwerk/man at C&A look, he was the man to watch. Ian was mesmerising on stage and appeared so totally possessed by the music. He went too soon.
Thank you Ian for every word, for every song. Your artistic brilliance resonated with me deeply, then as now. I only hope that you've found true peace wherever you may be.
