Before I take the plunge on a title(Ry Cooder's "Paradise and lunch" mo-fi 45)..could anyone tell me how they work...and what do they potentially offer over and above a 33.3 release of the same title?

No such thing as a 45 rpm LP. It's not an oxymoron, it's a contradiction of terms.

It's a 45rpm album but he's being pedantic. We know what you mean. Anyway, the advantage is better sound quality. The faster the record spins, the better the sound where actual vinyl is involved. There's more to it but that's the short answer.

Is the 45rpm MoFi a new release...?
There is the 33rpm MoFi that sounds great.

Anyway, every 45rpm I have (along with the corresponding 33) has been an improvement in detail and dynamics (to me). Sometimes a seemingly wider/deeper soundstage, too.

Last year I bought the Fleetwood Mac Rumours 2 x 45 RPM and guess what: It's a misprint. One of the records has a 45 RPM side and a 33 RPM side together. I did not return it because of the novelty factor.

I believe it’s being misrepresented as 45 rpm.
That said, I’d highly recommend even the 33 MoFi even if you have a nice original.

Metal Box sounds absolutely killer at 45rpm. And technically there is no 33rpm version of "Metal Box" as the standard vision is retitled "Second Issue" and doesn't come close in terms of sound quality or packaging.

Perhaps the confusion with the thread title could be cleared up with a change to something like "45 RPM albums". I think the "long players" part throws people off, as it isn';t a common term used for the format.

I don't think it's throwing any one off but it is likely ruffling the feathers of the elitist pedantic portion of SHtv. Fun, right? LOL!

Well, I disagree with you. A little word or phrase can change or confuse a meaning. You know that!

I may be an intellectually challenged Englishman, but I thought the term "L.P" was a widely recognised abbreviation. I was wrong. Something new learned every day,in future I will refer to them as "12" vinyls" to circumvent any confusion.

All i'm saying is that sometimes you must be explicit in order to convey your meaning to the widest audience possible.

To the OP: you did not use the abbreviation "L.P.". You used "long player".

The problem is not that people don’t recognize the abbreviation LP. The problem is that LP literally means a 12” microgroove record played at 33rpm. Therefore there can’t be a 45rpm LP as that contradicts one of the criteria of the format

Can we officially leave the semantics behind and get back to the thread? This has the potential to be interesting. Let's at least dispose of the terminology wars.
