There have been so many wonderful releases over the years. Which five would be among the editions you'd first keep (multiple film sets excluded)?

These are a mere five that immediatedly come to mind for me:

Gimme Shelter (David Maysles, Albert Maysles, Charlotte Zwerin) 1970
La Dolce Vita (Federico Fellini) 1960
Night And Fog (Alan Resnais) 1956
The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg (Jacques Demy) 1964
Dazed And Confused (Richard Linklater) 1993

I don't have enough titles yet to rank them, but I have enjoyed the ones I've purchased recently.

Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas
    Ghost World
    Don't Look Back
    Monterrey Pop

    On deck is:
    A Hard Day's Night
    Quadrophenia
    Gimme Shelter
    Repo Man
    Smithereens

Anyone know when the next sale is going to be?

Barnes and Noble sale is typically in July.

Amazon is having a sale right now. Not quite 50% off but close enough it you can't wait another 2 days. :D

Difficult question. The collection is just too good to just choose 5 films, but after a spontaneous look at my Criterion shelf I’d go with:

    Kagemusha
    Rebecca
    In The Mood For Love
    The Battle Of Algiers
    Hiroshima mon amour

"In the mood for love" is one of my favourite films and I have a couple of different DVDs (Japanese, UK, Criterion) plus the wonderful Soundtrack on 2 CDs.
It's hard to choose a single Kurosawa because the box set is great and so is Rashomon. Kagemusha has a very nice 2DVD set and a fantastic soundtrack. I have the Japanese box sets with all soundtracks. A very expensive but wonderful edition that I never regretted buying.
With Hitchcock it is like with Kurosawa, so I chose "Rebecca" because of the bonus material. It could have been "Notorious" or "Spellbound" as well.

I am looking forward to "War and Peace", it should in a couple of weeks.

Most of mine would be black and white classics from 1930-60....pick a few Fred and Ginger movies, Stage Door Canteen (for the music) and Stage Door itself for the wisecracks....and the rest would be cartoons. From the Miyazaki Hayao catalogue.

But none of those, save SWING TIME by Fred and Ginger, are on the Criterion Collection.

 Yeah, in typical Big Brother fashion, Facebook alerted me of the sale as soon as I got off this thread.

    I picked up:
    Harold and Maude
    Easy Rider
    Elevator To The Gallows

    I blame the heat.

Punished again for per-ordering. Damn it!

    On topic:
I am a huge fan of the Criterion Collection and I spent a lot of money on these films because many editions are just marvelous. I have about somewhere between 100 - 120 titles of the collection, all on DVD.
There was a time when most films were available on Hulu for free years ago (I don't remember when). All I needed was a VPN. I think there were a few commercial breaks though.
