The sound design in the film is masterful. It lays a lot of groundwork for the use of sound in many, many future films.

I love the extras on the Crierion The Night of the Hunter, but hate that they letterbox it, should have left it alone. It works a lot better in standard ratio, and yes I do know about the one shot where you can see the top of the set. Buy the old dvd and see for yourself.

After buying Notorious during the current 50% off sale, and watching last night, I think I gotta give Vampyr the boot and replace with this on my list.
Ingrid Bergman is amazingly beautiful - I couldn't take my eyes off her in every scene she was in.
Cary Grant would have made a great James Bond had they been making those in the 40's (guess he'd need to whip up a British accent though - ha).
    Another Hitchcock masterwork!

The only other version was a non-anamorphic DVD that sucked.

  9. I’ve got the MGM-Fox Blu-Ray of Notorious, debating if I should double-dip and get the Criterion. Anyone have both and can comment if it’s a worthwhile upgrade?

  10. Image quality improvement is there for the Criterion. I was On the fence for a while as well but it does look better. It’s not leaps and bounds though.

Joseph Losey's M is remarkable, not least because of the extensive location shooting, which documents many aspects of LA in that time period that no longer exist. The film had been out of circulation for years, except for the occasional poor-quality copy, until it was restored by LOC a few years ago. The restoration is what's been aired on TCM several times, and it looks great. Not to be missed.

    • Notorious, Alfred Hitchcock, 1946
    • Brazil, Terry Gilliam, 1985
    • Following, Christopher Nolan, 1998

    That's a tough question. Today I'd say:

The Bergman box. I don't think anyone else will try to top that for Ingmar's films.
    "M."
"War and Peace", a long-time overdue restoration.
Any of the Powell/Pressburger Technicolor releases.
    "Joan of Arc."
And bonus: "Vampyr". To give this knotty nightmare a half-way decent transfer deserves some kind of medal, given what was available before.

This is basically a list of "Movies Among My 10 Favorites That Are Available on Criterion Blu-ray":

    Days of Heaven
    Night of the Hunter
    The Seventh Seal
    The Third Man
    In the Mood for Love
    Blue Velvet

And yes, I know that's 6, not 5. You need a sixth man to get The Third Man.

Honorable mention: The Last Emperor (It annoys me the Blu-ray edition does not have the ultra-lengthy cut -- I understand why, but it's how I first saw the film, and how could there not have been enough space when it appears on the DVD release?)
