Country Joe & the Fish "Fixin' to Die Rag"

Any song which mentions Vietnam, "love-ins", or other hippie-centric stuff in the present or future tense is definitely and irrevocably a product of the 60s!

A lot of the stuff which has been posted is no doubt quintessentially "60s" and could not have happened in any other decade, but remain relevant on some level and enjoyable. Songs like this however are so firmly a product of their time that they are almost unlistenable now, except as historical curiosities.

    That’s too bad.
The song has such a positive, sunny vibe and has been reduced to a song about a meth whore.

There WERE no music videos on the 60s!
They were song “promo” films and weren’t designed for what MTV brought.

no I realise that. I am not sure if anyone was doing much different, but as a promo film/video, this always gave me the impression of moving away from the standard stuff

The actual participants in the San Francisco scene in 1966-67 loathed this song! To folks like The Dead and The Airplane, it was a cheesy L.A. advertisement for the Monterey Pop festival, which was put together by the L.A. pop royalty. The Bay Area crowd have always been suspicious of the Southern California crowd! The San Francisco bands begrudgingly agreed to appear- they knew it was going to be big and exposure would be valuable. They weren't THAT married to "authenticity", haha!

Despite that, it is a great pop song that could only have happened in the 60s because it was topical.

I think some of the posters here have production values confused with song craft.
A lot of the songs mentioned here are great songs that could have been written in any decade: "Lies", "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine", "Somebody To Love" etc.
If you just strum them out on an acoustic guitar they would still be good songs with strong melodies. It's the sound of these songs that might give them a a 'dated" status.

Also, like "Windy" there were many songs with bah-bah- bah sort of wordless background vocals and that trend died after that era.
