Rocky Burnette, of the pioneering rockabilly Burnettes, kicked off the 1980s with this U. S. hit, "Tired Of Toein' The Line."

Did Rick Nelson make some rock-a-billy in the 80s?

...not even in 50s, some would say;)

Steve Hooker just released a new album (just seven songs, two of them remixes of previously available material), clocking in at just around 25 minutes. But what kind of 25 minutes! Highly recommended. "Duende Blues" (PIMPHOUSE CD2)

Just ordered a collection by Denver's late Willie Lewis. His sound was uncannily authentic, often totally indistinguishable from the original 50's stuff.

Matchbox ~ Rockabilly Rebel. This was a top 10 hit in Australia before Runaway Boys.

Neat, I only know that song through Jimmy Ellis/Orion's version.

It was from the 90s, but Dale Hawkins' Wildcat Tamer is an excellent updating of his sound. I love that the CD isn't just maltshop rockabilly by the numbers, but has an additional swamp-rock layer that keeps it from sounding "nostalgic," which is the last thing you want from a older rocker making a comeback. I'd also slot Charlie Feathers' self-titled 1991 CD (on the Nonesuch label) in there.

As for contemporary rockabilly, I'd go with Don Cavallo, Mack Stevens and Deke Dickerson.

That's ridiculous. You might want to have that discussion with James Burton.

Absolutely...he returned to his rockabilly roots in 1983, and played it exclusively on his tours during
those years up until he died. This album is almost entirely live rockabilly from his final tours.

And here's a great clip of him doing "Do You Know What I Mean" from 1985
shortly before he died (along with the his backing musicians in this clip, but of course
not the Jordanaires). This recording is on the above CD.

The Psychobilly Kadillaks put out a couple killer albums in the 2000's. A lot of their songs have "adult" titles and subject matter, so I'll post a nice PG tune.

Says the person who seriously thinks that Chris Isaak and Shakin' Stevens are hellacious rockabilly?

As pop-friendly as Rick Nelson was, at his toughest he never stooped to this level:

Please quote where I said hellacious. And it's a shame things have to devolve rather than share an enthusiasm.

I'll put it back on the track with a tune that is decidedly NOT "pop":

admittedly, it's not from the 70s or 80s either, but it does prove that Ricky's heart was closer to Carl Perkins than Frankie Avalon...
