I love this genre......smooth stuff like Toto, the Doobie Brothers, Robbie Dupree, etc. What really gets me are those slow songs that are drenched in harmonies and sound Beach Boys/Pink Floyd influenced, yet are steeped in the cocaine culture that was typical of the time to the point where the productions are so glossy and over the top that they are almost absurd. I want to make a list of as many as I can for a compilation cd I want to make for myself, but I am stuck to come up with a bunch. So far:

    "I'm Not In Love" 10cc
    "Time" Alan Parsons Project
"I Love You" Climax Blues Band
    "Wishing You Were Here" Chicago

Wrong, wrong, wrong, Leppy. That's not the type of thing I'm talking about. This is not working. Bowie is way too cool for this type of thing. Does he look like Jeff Lynne? Does he have corn rows in his hair? Is his band made up of keyboard players wearing robes?

Open apology to prix and the forum

    :sigh:
I would just like to publicly apologize to prix and the forum. I am sorry for suggesting 'Word On A Wing' as a '70's/early '80s smooth and heavenly, cocaine fueled ballad. I suspend myself for 2 days.

Does anyone else find Into the Night disturbing with lyrics like 'She's only 16 years old, leave her alone they say'?

Of course "Word On A Wing" is a smooth and heavenly, cocaine ballad but it doesn't quite qualify, my man. The feel is wrong, dig? For one, the tempo is too fast....it's too lively and not dreamy enough. An example would be if I asked you for a trippy, psychedelic guitar song like "Little Wing" and you submitted "Nashville West". Technically "Nashville West" would qualify, but it's all wrong.

"I Can't Tell You Why" by the Eagles is a PERFECT example.

    Prix,

Are you talking about the Southern California sound? I'm not sure about the cocaine angle, but I LOVE that stuff! I have a friend wh is from California, and he loves it too. I once made him a three or four CD-R set of those types of songs. Anything like Seals & Crofts, Fleetwood Mac, America, John Sterart, Linda Rondstat...all that stuff!

A lot of that sound is soulful. What's wrong with soul?

Silk Degrees was a perfect So California sound. Not a lot of harmony except with the background vocals, but...
