I am a complete sucker for this stuff. I cut my teeth on 1970's radio and sure miss the days when the airwaves were full of songs that told stories, didn't complain, and had a bit of character and dignity. Here are some of my faves:

On and On -- Stephen Bishop
You're The Only Woman -- Ambrosia
    Lonely Boy -- Andrew Gold
Kiss You All Over -- Exile
Love Will Find A Way -- Pablo Cruise
    Dance With Me -- Orleans
This Guy's In Love With You -- Herb Alpert (hats off to The Man, Burt Bacharach)
The City of New Orleans -- Arlo Guthrie
Couldn't Get It Right -- Climax Blues Band
Cool Change -- Little River Band
    Baker Street -- Gerry Rafferty
Just Remember I Love You -- Firefall
Year of the Cat -- Al Stewart
Magnet and Steel -- Walter Egan
    Night Moves -- Bob Seger
I Go Crazy -- Paul Davis
We Just Disagree -- Dave Mason

It's the whole "cocaine fueled" statement that leaves me unable to identify this catagory. Back in the days when I used to imbibe (long gone, by the way), the very last thing I would probably want to hear with my powdery nostrils would be luscious, dreamy, mellow music. The effect of that particular intoxicant seemed to go better with dance music or something a bit more frenetic (say, Remain in Light by the Talking Heads). I dunno, maybe that's just me.

My wife said she associates the type of music on this thread with qualudes rather than cocaine and she wants to add "Afternoon Delight" to the list. Oh yeah,by the way, I cannot stand any of this stuff.

A lot of these are all wrong mostly because they are too fast. You guys have got the genre nailed, but we're talking about slow ballads here. Otherwise I'd be using "Africa" by Toto, "Steal Away" by Robbie Dupree, "Echos of Love" by the Doobie Brothers, etc. The whole cocaine thing is my way of describing what I think was largely behind the music of the time. Everybody was on the stuff. Now what I think is funny is when these guys were peaking in their euphoric, coked out haze,....they would create these AMAZINGLY lush and gorgeous soundscapes. That's what I'm talking about.

John Lennon "#9 Dream" is the prototype for this kind of thing, but again....it's a little too lively. Not only that, but John Lennon isn't a dork. The songs I'm talking about are usually done by dorks.

No offense to anybody here, but that nails it. At least, the music is done by people in a "dork phase." :) Pablo Cruise fits the bill for me. I used to love them.

Prix, are you going to make a mix? Post the track list when you're done.

Did I say that? Alan Parsons,....a dork??? Now way man! Anyone who's anyone knows that Alan Parsons is cooler than Sid Vicious, James Dean, Gene Vincent, John Lennon, and David Bowie combined. The guy is stone-cold, walking bad-ass. :D
