I want to know what drugs he was using and if he has any left. Check out the completely freaked-out looks he makes in this live rendition of that great song:

I guess the short answer is Halford's arrival, his range and ability, and his encouragement of Tipton and Downing to further strip away bluesy swagger as was happening with Ronnie Montrose's and Michael Schenker's playing in relation to Page, Blackmore, Beck, etc.,

It was a very modern sound.

The OP mentioned Budgie. Classic early 70's British metal. I discovered these guys in college in the early 70's and love the In For The Kill album. Tony Bourge played some heavy guitar back then.

National Flag. Their only album, Thank You and Goodnight, was self released in 1976. The tapes were found at an auction and reissued on CD.

To me, Sad Wings Of Destiny is a continuation of what they did on Rocka Rolla with far more focused songwriting and more memorable tunes. I don't see the two as that radically different. Just my .02.

From the ashes of Black Cat Bones (another band worth checking out) came Leaf Hound. This song in particular always sounded like it could fit right in with the first Zeppelin record, adbeit without the great production.

Thanks for the tip, just checked it out. Good but I much prefer that kid's version, keeps the same tempo as the original & has a much better guitar tone & solos (IMO). I assume EXODUS is a thrash band?

Oh man, been FOREVER since I heard that. My fave Hawkwind album by far, and the only one that I still own!

Great album but....wasn't the OP only asking for 1970's releases? Or are other decades fair game? (I only put that OVERDOSE cover in here because I could not find AC/DC's original)

I love The Cult but (& I am not the OP so I won't mention this again) - but I thought he was only asking for 70's songs (?)

    My favorite Pie song.

The demo versions are pretty cool too, Marriott making up words as he goes along.

The first song I ever air guitared along with (using a tennis racket), during Martin Barre's insanely heavy opening solo section with mutliple guitars starting around 2:20, complimented with perfect hard rock drumming:

(and of course there's AQUALUNG with its heavy riff and SUPERB guitar solo)

And a personal heavy guitar jam favorite from a guy who would rather be known as a new age musician (or something, ANYTHING, other than the guitar hero which he truly was):

Although I actually am more in rapture with his guitar work on this song from Futurama which is quite a hard rockin' guitar feast of an album for most of it

I remember this tune came out on the radio when I was in Jr H. But, never really explored them except hearing this LP maybe at a buddies house here and there. Looking back now, I find these guys and many other "Hard Rock" bands from the '70s kinda sadly overlooked IMO. Enjoyin' em now though.
"Live" German TV show that's really just that old "play along with the the LP" for the TV.......I believe

One thing that is apparent to me as I listen to all the clips of 70s heavy metal bands people are posting on this thread is how bad the drums sounded back then. Thin and lifeless, especially the snare and hi hat. I guess drum recording technology really wasn’t the best back in those days, although if they could get Led Zeppelin right, why couldn’t the others figure it out?

Wow, just beat me to it. I was going to mention Nazareth as a band that hit hard rock heaven in the 70's with these albums for me:

    Razamanaz (1973)
    Loud 'n' Proud (1973)
    Rampant (1974)
    Hair of the Dog (1975)
Close Enough for Rock 'n' Roll (1976)

& link to a couple songs like the one you did...and these too!

    Nazareth - Alcatraz (with lyrics)

Nazareth - Woke Up This Morning

    Nazareth - Changin' Times

    Nazareth Jet Lag

    NAZARETH " Silver Dollar Forger ( Parts 1 & 2 ) "

    Please Don't Judas Me

Yep. That cover is from Fabulous Disaster. East Bay thrash. Once had Kirk Hammett in the band.
