A quick perusal of the Sept. 1989 charts reveals to me that Proud to Fall by Ian McCulloch, unfortunately stalled at no. 51, is easily the best thing on either ...

This must have been where I began to lose interest too...although I thought it was about 1991 but I only own 7 of these.

Nope, I was wrong- it was just the US albums that left me thinking I had lost interest. I have 21 of the albums on the UK chart!

I don't think the UK (or Au) press ever knew how to deal with bands like Journey. After The Fall is a glistening gem of a song but too much sheen for these ascerbic mag writers.

It started to become more about legacy artists and back catalogues for me about this time. Nothing new was any good so I was reversing into the early 80s and 70s.

Candleland is such a great album. The title track should have been a smash.

The only 45s I really like on all those charts are Glittering Prize and I Melt With You ...

I’d love to know who M Lamour was in the one just above. We could have met up and discussed chart stats and the Guinness book (we lived in the same county!).

One of my favourite RM issues ever. I still remember that Thompson Twins LP review. It was sadly spot on.

I still have this issue. I bought 3 of the albums on that page. As I suppose did you!

There was a second page of album reviews I didn’t post as I wasn’t familiar with any of them.

I bought Thompson Twins on the day of release (16/9), but could only afford one album a week (at most), so the next purchase was Hounds Of Love the following Monday after school. I think there was a feature on HoL on R1 that weekend which inspired me to make that my next wanted album.

    I bought HOL on 18/9.

In Square Circle was one of those titles you had to wait for the CD. I didn’t get it until November.

I didn't get In Square Circle until about 1990....£1.99 in an HMV sale, on gatefold embossed vinyl.

Then upgraded to the CD at some point in the 00s.

The original CD had a 6 minute plus version of It’s Wrong (Apartheid). I think later pressings featured the shorter LP edition.

Being a pop fan was just so fantastic back in the day.
I really miss the old pop charts, and proper singles and the magazines and record shops on every street.
I used to spend hours looking at the charts in Record Mirror and reading Chartfile by Alan Jones.
Even just looking at the clothes was great, seeing pop stars change their image, or someone new arriving in the charts who looked fantastic and different.
I don't give a crap how old I am but it really cant be the same being a pop fan these days...
