Fans of the Alastair Sim version might want to know about the episode of THE AVENGERS wherein Patrick MacNee is joined by Mervyn Johns (Bob Cratchit in the Sim version) in a Christmas episode called "Too Many Christmas Trees".

Steed and Mrs. Peel attend a Dickensian Christmas party with Mervyn Johns playing the part of a Charles Dickens collector.

The episode was released on DVD back in 1999 as THE AVENGERS '65 VOLUME 4 and is also included in the more current Mrs. Peel megaset which gathers all of the Diana Rigg episodes together.

I was at a holiday party earlier this evening and the subject came up among film fans. First, it's amazing how many there are. Alastair Sim, Seymour Hicks, George C. Scott... the list goes on.

    Any votes for favorite?

Great atmosphere - Perfectly captures the grittiness and gloominess of Dickens-era England so important to the story.

Thanks everyone. Alastair Sim is the one I recall. I saw Seymour Hicks' version recently. Although the effects were primitive, the atmosphere was very moving.
I didn't know Jack Palance every performed it. I'll have to look for it. Amazing what a great and filmic story it is.

I have to agree with Alastair Sim. It is certainly the standard.

I'm surprised that no one has voted for Mr Magoo!

Not acceptable for me! I have the 2003 VCI DVD that contains both b/w and colorized (ouch!) versions of this film. It is a poor transfer, certainly paling compared to the nicely restored 1938 version with Reginald Owen which I just saw on TCM.

There was supposed to be a refurbished print of this (the Alastair Sim versin) last year (2005). The BBC did a restoration and was about to release it to the US when it was discovered that VCI owned the US rights.

Now there are rumors that VCI will release a remastered version for the 2007 season, so there is hope. Meanwhile, the older VCI transfer will have to do for those of us in the US.

I've heard that the Canadians had a supposedly remastered version out last year. The stories I hear are that it was "Frankensteined" together from about seven different prints and that the changeovers are quite noticeable, and overall is not that good. But there are some extras. I think, on that version (from an outfit called Morningstar).

We personally enjoy the Sim, the Owen, and the Scott versions, as well as Mr. Magoo and Scrooge McDuck!

I'm betting that most of the voters for Sim haven't seen the Scott version. If you vote, you should say whether you've seen both versions. And also the excellent Patrick Stewart version.

For sentimental reasons, as a child my family and I always watched the Reginald Owen version every Christmas season. WGN here in Chicago used to show it on a program entitled Family Classics and it was a must see for us.

As an adult, I've come to love both the George C. Scott and Alastair Sim versions. I've yet to see the Patrick Stewart version (though I've heard great things about it).

Does anyone remember the Henry Winkler version set in America during the Great Depression? It was called (I believe) An American Christmas Carol.

Wishing you all a lovely day filled with whatever brings you smiles.

Not Christmas if I don't see this. I still remember seeing this in the theater when I was about 6.
