I am a big fan of the Project, and I Know this was their first album in which digital technology was involved in its production. Wikipedia is very vague about this album’s recording process, saying that it was “recorded analog and mixed directly to digital tape”. But, what does that mean? Was the mixing process done in the analog domain and only the final product was transferred to digital? Or was the mixing already done (at least partially) in the digital domain? I know there were some (incredibly expensive) digital mixing desks that used U-Matic tape and what not. Does someone know how this album was produced? Thanks!

I'll bump this thread. I'm curious to know this too. I'm aware that recording a feed to tape at the same time as digital was very common back then. It'd be cool to know the particulars on this album.

    Either way it sounds fantastic.
