I thought this deserved a mention in this thread!

I’m currently reading Kate Bush’s biography and apparently The Sensual World 12” single release had a double-grooved A-Side so that either the song or an instrumental version of the song would be played depending on where the needle was placed. Mischievously she didn’t tell the record company so it wasn’t labelled as such on the record. Suffice to say there were many returns as people thought that the “record has lost it's vocals” and the “vocals have gone missing” to the point that EMI added a sticker! ;-)

Reading my first post again and those comments really cracked me up. I'll try and find some more complaints.

Not music, but I was in Barnes and Noble over the weekend, and a guy was returning a Criterion Collection Blu-ray because the picture was too grainy, I'm serious!
I guess he wanted it to look like Avatar, lol!

    Marvellous, thanks for sharing.

The first one reminded me of this John Martyn anecdote relating to Danny Thompson:

"We were doing a studio gig at the BBC. An apprentice engineer calls down on the Tannoy, 'Mr Thompson, we are getting a strange buzzing noise on the bass.' Danny puts down the bass, marches up into the control booth and says 'That son is tone and its taken me twenty years to get it."

I posted this on the AFTER MIDNIGHT thread but it belongs here as well!

Had a funny complaint about the AFTER MIDNIGHT by a so-called "audiophile" over the weekend. He cornered me and told me that he thought he had a defective SACD because the violin sounded so terrible. Had to laugh. I broke it to him that Stuff Smith played his fiddle through a guitar amp and what did he expect? That's the sound that Stuff was famous for. He looked at me like I was poop on his shoe and strolled off. Can you believe it? Here is a pic of an AFTER MIDNIGHT song being recorded at the Tower. Note Stuff and his amp.

My favourites are the subjective complaints, like the one about Orbison's Greatest Hits. That's just precious.

One of my friends works in a record store. Some recent gems:

Customer holding a copy of Steve Miller's Greatest Hits: "So, is this like a compilation?"

    The winner:

"I'm trying to get into jazz. I was thinking of John Coltrane. Does he have any records that sound like the Rat Pack? Something that really swings, like Van Morrison's Moondance"

I laughed the rest of the afternoon.

I'm laughing about the guitar that is supposedly out of tune on the CD...but not on the guy's record.

Honestly, I find that Criterion often does tend to emphasize the grain. It may well be accurate, but not necessarily pleasing, IMO. They could do some moderate grain reduction, I believe, without unnaturally smoothing the image. I'm thinking particularly of My Dinner With Andre and Kagemusha.

    Not DCC-related, but here goes...

Steely Dan - Katy Lied & Aja (Steve's masterings):

Return: Too warm and too dynamic, as if you're sitting in a studio in the 70's. I rather liked that squishy, trebly sound from the '99 remasters I used to have. At least I didn't have to fool with the volume too often on those train rides.
