Question about double albums: It seems like it would cost way more for record companies to produce a double album, so I'm surprised that any of them would be lesser known/relatively unknown. Was it just common for bands to put out double albums back in the day, or is it a sign that the record company had a lot of faith in the band and thought the release would be a big success?

You are correct. It definitely cost the label more for studio time.

Usually the band would have several single albums and a somewhat proven track record before doing a double album. Groups like Gypsy and even Chicago were the exception to the rule.

In Gypsy’s case they were on Metromedia Records who did not have a clue about working with a rock group or how to promote them.

Purgatory/Paradise by Throwing Muses. In some ways the greatest work Kristin Hersh has done.

I’m not sure if any of these are too well-known...

Public Image Ltd.: Metal Box/Second Edition
The original UK LP was a triple-12”, but the US edition was a standard 2-LP.
Yo La Tengo: There’s a Riot Going On
The Mountain Goats: In League with Dragons
Cavern of Anti-Matter: void beats/invocation trex
    Cavern of Anti-Matter: Hormone Lemonade
    Most of Stereolab’s albums

And this one is a cheat: Dub Syndicate: One Way System. The original was a cassette-only release. The recent reissue is a double-LP.

Ask me again in two years and I’ll probably add more Yo La Tengo and Mountain Goats albums.

My first thought was Microcastle/Weird Era Cont by Deerhunter but I'm not sure if that would count as they were recorded separately but packaged together.

"Lesser known" on a forum like this, thanks Steve, is super challenging.

So, w/the very real potential of failing both requirements:
"Music from Free Creek - Various Artists"

20 issues of this release may be 19 to many to qualify here!

Too many reasons to list why this should not be lesser known; "Beck & Clapton"* just to name two!!

    * although going by the aliases "A. N. Other & King Cool".

This would've been my pick as well. My all-time favorite album and I don't even understand Portuguese.
