Thanks @Jamsterdammer. I'll use the three sources to find three tracks from countries which you have an association with.

From The Netherlands via Greatest Musicians by Countries, here is harpsichord virtuoso Gustav Leonhardt playing J.S. Bach's 'ARIA from the Goldberg Variations, BWV 988'.

From Tajikistan, via Complete archive of folk music for all countries is Shoista Mullodzhanova with 'Великая Шоиста Муллоджанова'.

And, from Venezuela, via Worldly Rise, here is La Vida Boheme with the very low key partially spoken 'Flamingo'.

I used a number of sources, which changed over time.

The Culture Trip was particularly useful early on. E.g. 10 Musicians You Need to Know From Turkey.

Womex.com occasionally included incorrect information, but was a gold mine. WOMEX

Small Island Big Song is in my opinion a great project, and music from the project appeared very frequently. https://www.smallislandbigsong.com The Laya Project is similar. Laya Project - Six shores sharing one ocean, one sky, and one language of survival and music.

I would often google the name of a country and progarchives to find bands. E.g. Progressive Rock & Related Bands/artists from RUSSIA

Very often my starting point would be 'Music from <Country>' on Wikipedia. E.g. Music of Chile - Wikipedia

Worldnomads.com was often useful, but I perhaps used this site less than I could have. Songs From the Past: Exploring My Irish Heritage

Songlines 50 greatest albums of the last 5 years was useful. The 50 Greatest World Music Albums of the Last 5 Years (updated 2020)

Jamsterdammer - of the three links you give above, folkcloud.com was the only one I used - I didn't know of the others. :D

For tricky areas of the world such as smaller Melanesian islands I would have individual albums bookmarked. E.g. Spirit of Melanesia, David Fanshawe. Pacific Trilogy Vol. 3

The Mideast Tunes blog is one I probably could have made more use of. Mideast Tunes’ Top 20 Indie Artists of 2014

The Music Time in Africa blog was occasionally useful. The music of Mauritania, Part One. « Music Time in Africa

    AllAfricanMusic was often useful. #Botswana

Beehype led me to some very nice music. beehype – Best Music from Around the World

Weird Psychedelic Soundwaves from Southeast Asia in the 60s and 70s was very useful. Weird Psychedelic Soundwaves from Southeast Asia in the 60s and 70s

Unite Asia is probably another site I should have used more: Unite Asia - Punk/Hardcore/Metal News from around Asia

Googling realworldrecords and the name of a country often worked well. Real World Sessions: Remmy Ongala & Super Matimila, 17 August 1991 - Real World Records

I'd often look for playlists on Spotify. Some of these were absolute goldmines. Some were play - skip - play - skip - play - skip - play - skip - lose faith in humanity. Here's a playlist of Peruvian underground electronic music. Peruvian Underground | Música Electrónica Peruana, a playlist by Victor Tello on Spotify

Youtube of course. Though, I found that playlists just called 'Samoan music' were often very poor sources. They had to be more niched playlists.

Lots of custom searches appended with country. Both on google, and on Youtube. E.g. "Ethiopian singer songwriter". "singer songwriter" was a key term that acquired many songs that I posted. I would often add "punk rock" "jazz" etc.

And so on. I think there were other sites/methods I used before I started bookmarking them. I avoided searching on SHF itself, because I preferred to find something new to the forum.

Etc. etc. etc. I also used some methods I learned of from @John Hp's very informative and interesting background information and links, but I won't post those as 'my' sources. At one point I went through a well known concert series looking for everything they had published. Which was a lot :D Also, finding compilation albums such as 'Ye Ye Girls of French Pop' on Discogs and working from there was also cribbed from John. I will have cribbed methods from others as well. Particularly back in the summer when I was working hard on my notes, I was looking for anywhere to find music from.

Thanks @HitAndRun! Very kind to put up these three songs. Searching in the language of the country also helped. Once you master 6 like me, you can basically get by in dozens more. Of course I also used my extensive personal collection of music from around the world and in particular from Africa, Latin America and the wider Central Asia region.

This is an index of the entire thread. Clicking on the page number should take you directly to the first post for the named country.

If you are looking at this thread sometime in 'the future', then some YouTube videos or other links may not work any more. We tried to mostly include the name of the artist and song (or other information) in plain text in the posts so that substitutes for any now missing videos can be found.

We hope you find this thread informative, and entertaining.

I'm not planning to try and restart this thread, but I note that threads get locked if they remain quiet for a year and hence I thought I would bump this one occasionally.

As a musical contribution, the band Mesopotamian Fusion specialise in Assyrian/Syriac music which wasn't selected as a non-country area/culture in the thread as a whole though there has been at least on Assyrian singer featured in the thread before.

    From the YouTube description.

The song of Dalale, in the dialect of Bohtan, is the story about the girl who was sacrificed by her father in law and buried in the structure of Zakho bridge, in today's northern Iraq. According to the legend, she was sacrificed to prevent the bridge from collapsing. This Dalale song s version is inspired by the documentary Path of faith about The Assyrians history of Georgia,Tifilis.

I haven't found much about the band but from various tidbits on their Facebook page, they may be based in Sweden.
