    Sometimes the simple purity of just a piano and a singing voice is the perfect way to present a song. Here's an opportunity to share some of your favorite piano/vocal performances. A piano and a voice.

    I'll start: "Have A Little Faith In Me," by John Hiatt.

    Actually one of the best examples I could think of was Brian's Surf's Up which captures all the complexities of the finished version but just as beautiful.

    Tom Waits is always great, but, for me, early Tom Waits is the best.

    Manhattan Transfer did "Agua" on their Brasil album. Janis did it again solo, with Fred Hersch bringing a stunning, artistic stateliness to it. You can almost hear the teakwood and bamboo around the room. It's one of my go-to picks for demonstrating the stark power of a single voice and piano;

    The great Jim Boggia, from his "Abbey Road Sessions" project, doing "Penny Lane". (NOTE: You'll have to click on the link and then go down and start the song yourself, but believe me, it's worth it!) ...

    A few years back Sparks, one of my all time favorite musical acts, released a live album with their songs rendered with only piano and vocals. (An 'unplugged' albums twenty years too late!) However, I haven't bothered to get it. I love the full sound they achieve on their studio albums so much that I'm afraid this will be a let down.

    Jim Croce, normally a guitar artist, ironically recorded a piano based song as one of his final recordings and one that was the only song he ever recorded that was written by his guitar companion, Maury, who sadly died with him. Pure beauty all the way and a song that will live with me until the day that I die.

    That's the one I was thinking of when I saw the thread title. Wish we could hear more stripped-down '80s Joni.
