Many years ago I used to have Lava Lamps in my listening space. I feel that it helps promote relaxation and mood. Only thing is care needs to be taken where they are placed as there have been reports of them cracking and damaging furniture and worse, instruments like pianos or equipment. I also love coloured glass lamp fixtures as that’s my type of environment. I think I’m going to get me a Lava Lamp again seeing as they won’t let me buy the painting I really want to hang on my wall. Anything you use to embellish and promote listening in your space?
How much did you offer the Courtauld for the Manet? They paid £4.4 million at Sotheby’s for it in 1994. I imagine it'd get five times that today.
Wel the 'foot' or 'stand' or how would you call it, is old (copper but completely tarnished and coloured over time which is how I like my copper instead of being shiny and yellow), it's a piece from an aunt of ours who died recently. We just bought a new lampshade for it (Ikea!) because we didn't like the one it came with.
I love the light patterns through the shade. Any chance you have a link for it? (Or did you find it in the old-fashioned way, in person, at a shop? )
We have an atypically huge Angelica Kauffman original that’s way to big for the listening room and is unfortunately stored away (pity).
Yep, we went to a nearby ikea shop but here's the link for the US site: NYMÖ Lamp shade, black, brass color, 17" - IKEA The inside is shiny gold, outside is soft textured darkbrown/black. They come in different sizes too! The pattern is further enhanced depending on the bulb you use in it. Too bright and it will fade, a softer bulb will enhance the pattern (I use one of those new led bulbs but with a very low Kelvin value, to get the warm light).
I use Philips hue bulbs along with led strips , I can set the room mood to any color including the GIK ceiling cloud I installed last year. I posted years back on the importance of lighting during listening and was largely laughed at. The wrong lighting can affect your mood exponentially and the right lighting can relax and take away any distractions allowing one to better focus on the given task (in this case music) warm lighting as mentioned above goes miles to a sublime playback session.
I have various things - an optical lighted tree, stained glass lamps placed in different places, artwork (Van Gogh, Picasso, Ansel Adam's sister's watercolors now).... Not sure if this counts, but last Sunday morning, listening to some music on the big couch with my wife by my side, and the two beagles where ever they fit. That was relaxing, moreso than anything else in the room....
