I'd definitely go with Stephen Graham. As you say, Graham had five seasons to perfect the character, grow with it, and show the transformation of small time guy to the biggest gangster in the world (or better said, the US). With The Untouchables DeNiro is already there. That said, DeNiro's performance was quite good.

How about Paul Muni or Al Pacino as "Scarface"? Yeah, Tony Montana isn't Capone in name, but for all intents and purposes, he pretty much is.

An "actor" playing himself is never a good idea. That sure wasn't.

  6. David Carradine. Kwai Chang Caine. Kung Fu.

...and for me, when I was young, I would agree with Errol Flynn as Robin Hood, BUT.....

 I'm watching a Clouseau double-bill on TCN right now. I'm in between 'The Return of the Pink Panther' and 'The Pink Panther Strikes Again'

Just curious what other actors played those roles, other than Newman as Roy Bean

Actually, I thought Heche was the only good thing about the Van Sant movie (which is a pointless exercise in stupidity otherwise). If the approach had been entirely different, I think she might have brought something substantial to the role. Alas...

Dick York will always be Darrin Stephens to me.
Tom Baker defined Doctor Who for me.

And on a more controversial note, I really liked Brian Cox' interpretation of Hannibal Lecter. He was darker, more sinister, and equally intelligent to Hopkins' portrayal. Jodie Foster was the perfect Clarice though, so maybe the casting on the Hannibal stories was kind of messed up in a lot of ways.

Oh... and definitely Noomi Rapace as Lisbeth Salander. Rooney Mara is a formidable actress... I really liked her in Side Effects... but too plain of a Lisbeth for me.

Newman also played Henry Wiggen in a TV version of Bang the Drum Slowly in the 50s, with Albert Salmi as Pearson

I don't know who played Daddy Clanton in Gunfight at the OK Corral (the one with Burt Lancaster)

To add to that, Rapace has been in what? Three of The Girl movies to Mara's one? I must say I really liked Rooney Mara's performance in the Fincher film, but I'd agree Lisbeth Salander is Rapace.
