Now there's a very fine actor that few people ever mention. :)

Who else has played Charles Ingalls? Who else has played Dan Fielding? Who else has played Harry T. Stone? Or Christine Sullivan?

Those are all unique characters played by ONE actor. I don't think a lot of people understand the concept of this thread.

Roles played by different actors portraying the same character in different movies or tv shows. Why is that so hard?

I guess in that case,it really depends on which one you grew up with and when you were born and which Superman from the comics that was "yours". For kids who grew up in the 40s and 50s and possibly 60s its George Reeves. He was clearly that early paternal Superman. Those who grew up with the late Silver and early bronze age Superman who was a portrayed a little less of a Paternal figure and a bit younger,Chris Reeve is that Superman.

Or more put more simply, George Reeves was the early Joe Shuster/Wayne Boring/early Curt Swan Superman brought to life. Chris Reeve is the Neal Adams/Jose Garcia Lopez/Later Curt Swan Superman brought to life.

So I'd say neither is the wrong answer.

I interpret the concept of the thread as "roles you can't imagine being played by any other actor".

So while Zachary Quinto has played Spock, he's still channeling Leonard Nimoy. Nimoy is Spock.

I agree that debating your favorite Joker or Superman doesn't really belong here, since by definition no actor truly owns the role (although Heath Ledger really does).

That said, Mark Hamill's Joker voice work has become so iconic it's now difficult to imagine any other voice actor doing an animated Joker. His work for the Batman video games is simply stellar. Kevin Richardson was great in the 2004 Batman series but he still borrows a little bit from Hamill.

I'd nominate Jack Nicholson for One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. Although the McMurphy in the novel was a large redheaded fellow, Jack now owns the role.

But unless there’s been a performance of the character by another actor, how do we know?

Others will disagree, but I don't like Laurie's American accent - both generally in other roles and specifically for House. It always sounds phony to me. Regarding House, the character - I've always considered House a sociopath. Once you think of the character as such, he becomes much more intelligible. And as for me, the character's gifts of a high intellect and of diagnosing the seemingly indiscernible seemed less like expert deduction, and rather tended towards the magical and the miraculous due to the written script. Only he could diagnose the patient's ailment because the script said so.

I presume you can tell I'm not a big fan of the show.

Yeah, but being that the OP liked my comment and what he said in the first post of the thread, it was pretty clear what he was driving at.

Whatevs, though, it’s not my thread so I’m not going get to any more worked up over it than I already have ... heh.
