I think Al Green music and style was definetely a great ispiration for Paul.

Listen to his famous song SHA LA LA and you'll find some distinctive hooks later reworked by Paul and his arranger (Fiachra Trench) on SILLY LOVE SONGS.
Paul later stated that TINY BUBBLE was in Al Green's style...

I think also GIRLFRIEND has got something from him.
I swear that ALl's song HANGING ON has got something that was in a Paul's song but I cannot catch which one...Help me!:)

  2. Love them both.....but not real sure about your examples............

TRY THIS ONE: Macca's "Call Me Back Again" !

Have you heard the similarities between SILLY LOVE SONGS and SHA LA LA? They are incredible.

I heard that he had Michael Jackson in mind when he wrote Girlfriend. And then Michael ended up covering it a year later.

Well I sure can hear that Al Green sound on "Silly Love Songs" in particular the horns and strings.

That's what I meant. The similarities are clear. And the two songs had the same string arranger...

"Silly Love Songs"? If this is the case, then Paul owes Al an apology.

A lot of people were influenced by Al Green, in particular the Hi Records sound achieved by producer Willie Mitchell.

But no one has equaled their best work.

All musicians are inspired or influenced. Anyone saying otherwise is flat out wrong. A musician becomes interested in music by LISTENING To others music.

That's really cool. Def hear an influence/inspiration there. Didn't know same arranger worked on both songs.

BTW Tiny Bubble is one of my faves on Driving Rain. Love the groove on that one.

I don't think it sounds similar.

If based on the lyrics, "Silly Love Songs" seems to owe a bit more to Green's "L-O-V-E (Love)."

Al Green would be very appreciative if a masterfully crafted pop masterpiece like Silly Love Songs was inspired by him.

I hope/assume you're being facetious, but with a handle like maccafan it's hard to tell.

Al Green is one of the greatest artist of all time (kudos to Willie Mitchell) so it's no surprise Paul was influenced. I never really noticed before but can hear it now with Silly Love Songs and Tiny Bubbles.

Dwight Yoakum's "Nothing" also pays tribute to the Al/Hi groove.

    Anybody got any others?

Gentle Giant, the only thing I'm being is honest.

Al Green would be appreciative to know that a worldwide #1 smash hit was influenced by him, why wouldn't he be, especially knowing that a bonafide legend like Paul McCartney wrote it!

Al Green would be proud of any association.

This never occurred to me, but I see the similarities. If Paul did it knowingly, he did a great job of being influenced by some Al Green, while not imitating him. "Tiny Bubble", on the other hand is Paul doing Al Green, although I also think its a great Paul song. Heck, that song could have been on I Can't Stop, the Al Green - Willie Mitchell reunion that came out two years after Driving Rain.
