And it's kinda easy to overlook the work Marilyn Monroe did, since we tend to think of her as a sex symbol and not an actress. She had your basic eye candy roles in Love Happy, The Asphalt Jungle and All About Eve, but beginning with Clash By Night in '52 she turned in some solid acting thru her final role in 1961's The Misfits with just one clunker, The Prince and the Showgirl, and I point the finger on that one more at Laurence Olivier than Monroe.

How about Spielberg from Jaws til about Empire of the Sun.

And he's had other hits....but his one year where he released Jurassic Park and Schindler's list would be hard to top (And I don't even particularly like Jurassic Park)

While not a leading man every movie from John Cazale’s short career was an Oscar nominee.

Fantastic actor that left us too soon.

I really enjoyed Kevin Spacey’s ‘92-‘95 run, from Glengarry Glen Ross to Consenting Adults to Swimming With Sharks to The Ref to Seven to The Usual Suspects. He was still capable of great work after that, but that period was magical.
Glengarry Glen Ross was also the first movie - probably because of my age - that I finally ‘got’ Pacino (though the whole cast was incredible).
Philip Seymour Hoffman’s 2002-2008 run was pretty amazing, too.

When you consider the quality of the movies and Pacino’s acting, no one tops that 1972-75 run.

Don't forget the fine job he did in The Sea Hawk and the ho-hum The Prince and the Pauper absolutely lights up once he appears at the end of the first half. I also liked him in '41's Dive Bomber. Objective Burma is actually from '45 and I think the decline in his work had already started by that point; the statutory rape trials he went thru in '42 really seemed to turn something in his soul sour.

How did I forgot The Sea Hawk! Something I didn't realise until the other day was that his later '40s movies were often even more successful financially than the well known classics.

Couldn't agree more. The 70's was a great time for actors - period. Find me another decade where Elliott Gould, Walter Matthau and Gene Hackman are leading men. And how's about a nice shout out for the women also finding better roles in more challenging movies - Diane Keaton, Gena Rowlands, Jane Fonda, Faye Dunaway...

Pacino"s run from 72-75 is outstanding...but it sure came to a screeching halt with Booby Deerfield (1977).
