You mean quotation marks ~ but that isn't what I meant exactly. In the context of forum discussion, we don't normally (at least I don't ) enclose all posted writing (such as this paragraph I am now typing) within a single set of quotation marks, despite the fact that we are conversing in a sense. I would reserve the use of quotation marks for those instances when I am quoting a word, phrase, sentence , or paragraph(s) that I myself or someone else had previously said. I might also put a title or cliche in quotation marks to distinguish it as a manner of speaking. There was the question raised earlier regarding what constitutes grammar, and I had pointed out that academically it applies to all aspects of language both written and spoken, though technically there is distinction to be made. We all know this post is written, but because it is interactive, and (because of modern texting capabilities) often taking place in real-time, are we to consider this language that is spoken or written, for the considerations of linguistics, or both.

No, I meant commas. I used the quotation marks to denote the phrase I was referring to, or to which I was referring, if one wants to be grammatically anal. Your sentence was something to the effect of: ...our duty I should think is to practice diligent decorum. It should read: ...our duty, I should think, is to practice diligent decorum.

I misunderstood you. Yes, I do get sloppy with punctuation, grammar, syntax, what have you - when texting. I am constantly fighting with auto-correct and a tiny smartphone keyboard when posting, and the former is constantly inserting misspelled words instead of correcting them as it should , and I constantly have to self-correct the auto-correct function's mistakes, which is blindingly frustrating and so I often settle for less-than-perfect orthographic syntax, as long as I am fairly confident my meaning will be construed.


It just occurred to me that much of this thread discussion has centred around an action specified in forum rules as forbidden ~ the correcting of other poster's spelling and grammar !

 

That's a completely different issue to the one we're talking about – that would be standard, modern usage. This is an archaic usage, in which the apostrophe, after the figure and before the suffix, denotes that the numbers themselves represent a contraction of the words they represent. In other words, it used to be common to write "the twenty-fourth" as "24'th" whereas since at least the eighties, "24th" has become standard.

 

I didn't know banquet was a verb! I suppose that could also work as well.

Metamorpheus is a combination of the two words “metamorphosis” and “Orpheus”, and by no means a new pun.

 

I agree, you have to be paying attention when keyboarding as opposed to writing. And no offence meant to anyone I’ve “corrected” or disagreed with during this entertaining thread.

 

Oh, I see. I wasn’t aware of that archaic usage with that placement of the apostrophe.

 

There has been a trend lately , in which we see the verbisation of
adjective/noun usage:

example - *adulting*

Also there are a lot of other instances of wordplay entering common parlance as a form of popular (if colloquial) usage.
But I guess that is another thread - although - there are certainly numerous instances among album titles, where, I think, there tends to be the assumption of a liberal license to manipulate language in much the same way as is presented in "Alice Through the Looking Glass" by Lewis Carrol, with the variation of intent to replacing total nonsense with semi-ambiguous insinuation.
