You beat me to it. I reckon I've listened to side one 10 times more than side 2. Probably more.

Me too, and Ziggy Stardust is one of those with a stronger second side.

Side 2 on Lou Reed's Transformer. The quality seems to taper out...

I’ve been listening to Prince’s Sign 'O' the Times a lot in recent days. Great album, but for me the second side is easily the weakest. Third side is my favorite, followed by 1 and 4.

    I prefer Side 2

    Of course.

I would imagine that there’s some consensus out there too, but I’m not interested in conducting a poll.

Side 2 is a great collection of songs, no stinkers IN MY OPINION. The Medley starting with “You Never Give Me Your Money” is IN MY OPINION a unique and beautiful rock construct. Sheer genius.

As for side 1, we have a collection of unrelated songs weakened by inclusion of the granny rock nonsense of “Octopus’ Garden” and Maxwell’s Silver Hammer”. Both are dreck . . . IN MY OPINION.

I hope I provided enough qualifiers.

In mine, I guess. I think Meddle is fantastic on both sides. Side 1 is, of course, much different than side 2.

So what is the “explanation” anyway? A long psychedelic instrumental piece is inherently “better” than a set of songs that includes thoughtful acoustic tunes, doggy blues, and a great bass jam tune? Not in my “corner of the universe” anyway.

Re The Joshua Tree - didn't the producer's wife order them by her own preferences and they went with that..? I vaguely remember hearing that story, I think...

That could be part of it for me too, the side 1 songs had a LOT of airplay. Part of the reason I like the side 2 songs so much is because they’re longer, there’s more time for them to develop, more story to them.

I agree it took me a while to get into - but I've always thought Satellite of Love was brilliant! Equal to anything on Side 1.

Steven Wilson The Raven that Refused to Sing etc, side 1

"Drive Home" is OK; I don't like either of the other two songs on that side much.

    Side 2 is wonderful.

I agree. I think its an album where every song just gets better as the album progresses (although I still enjoy side 1). Luminol doesn't do much for me. Having said that I realise I'm in the minority for thinking it's one of Steven's lesser solo albums.

I can't concur. It may not be as strong as Side 1, I still like Side 2 alor.

You call that 1-2-3 punch of "Dancing" "Wardrobe" "Firth of Fifth" weak? Wow!!!
I will agree side 2 is strong, but not nearly as much as side 1

98% of these responses are confusing weak with not as strong as... There is a difference!
So far the only one I can make an argument for is The Police "synchronicity".

And...in what universe would side 1 of Abbey Road be considered weak? The first two tracks are timeless classics and huge hits. Yes, it does contain "Maxwell's" and "Octopus", but we also have "Oh Darling" which is a great deep cut, and the proto-metal bad-ass "I want you"

I’m not sure what alexpop intended, but I’m taking “weak” to mean “weaker.”

Isn't it amazing how some other people's opinions of certain songs can differ from yours? I know it seems impossible, but it's a fact of life that we all need to get used to.

"proto-metal bad-ass" pretty well sums up why I dislike "I Want You". As for "Oh Darling", I find that to be about the lamest most amateurish piece of music the Beatles ever recorded. I swear I was making up better tunes than that when I was about six years years old.
And on the other hand, I quite like "Octopus" So there you go.

The album that gets a lot of of stick, but I think side 1 is superb. Side 2 is where it goes wrong in the main.

After the exhilaration of side one, side two of Talking Heads Remain in Light is a letdown.
