I think that is arguable, apparently Peter Hook wasn't happy with Hannett's production.

Whether Hook was happy with it or not isn't the point surely?

Definitely some of the Dark Horse Records artists like Splinter, Attitudes and Jiva  weren’t up to par compared to their producer.

    only Ravi Shankar was noteworthy

Well, what exactly is your argument for the producer being more important on those records?

Many Apple Records artists like Trash, Derek and Lon Eaton, Mary Hopkin, Black Dyke Mills Band and Doris Troy were upstaged by their producers. James Taylor showed some early promise but his career didn’t really get going until he signed with Warner Bros

They were a punk band and wanted the sound they played live. Hannett took it somewhere else. He had the vision to give it what it became.

Frank Zappa produced some albums for other artists on his own labels (Bizarre/Straight) records, since he was more known than most of the artists he produced for on these labels.

I don’t know, a record producer to me is kind of like a film editor: hard to say what they contributed and thus how good they were, unless we’ve seen what raw material they had to work with.

Exactly what I was going to say. If Bob Rock didn’t come on, we probably would have something closer to AJFA. Especially due to the fact Enter Sandman’s lyrics were going to be about crib death, but Bob Rock said no to that.

Most of Spector's 60s work. In fact the songs were often sung by folks other than the named artists

    First 2 Monkees albums

Masterpiece and some of the other NW produced Temptations albums

Fair, I'm going to listen to The John Peel Sessions to remind myself what Joy Division sound like without Hannett's production.
