Dean might’ve had a hard time remaining serious enough

I'd put Ray Price "Night Life" in this category.

Yes! Great album- I was fortunate to meet Mr. Price a few months before he passed away. He autographed my LP of ‘The Other Woman’ - He’s my favorite country singer.

An instrumental selection in a similar mood is Buddy Morrow’s Night Train album LPM-1427.

She had a great voice for this kind of material. Those early albums are probably her best.

I really like this album. I understand it’s probably the most ‘controversial’ Sinatra album not considering ‘Duets’. The lyrics are very sentimental and sad. The musical arrangement is of course odd for Sinatra - but once you come to terms with it, it is a fine album.

True - I’m not sure which album would apply best perhaps ‘Closing Time’?

Yes, and I'd add Mark Lanegan ( as the bastard step child maybe.)

For me Sylvia Syms's 1960 album Torch Song

Frank Sinatra reportedly called Syms "the world's greatest saloon singer".

Sinatra thought highly enough of her to conduct her 1982 album Syms By Sinatra arranged by Don Costa.

I also like Sarah Vaughan's 1963 album The Lonely Hours arranged by Benny Carter.

    Here's the title song:

Yes. There’s a whole lot of family curiosities out there. They all rank among the best

And Jeri Southern's 1955 album The Southern Style.

She wrote this song called I Don't Know Where To Turn

I also think the original Francis Albert Sinatra/Antônio Carlos Jobim album is outstanding night music, though not saloon. I've played it on repeat and slept well. Very relaxing. Not that it's boring, just very soothing to listen to, either awake or asleep.

That’s a great track - is the whole album like that?

  19. Possibly slightly on the fringe of what the OP is looking for but 'Coles Corner' by Richard Hawley is an outstanding album, particularly the opening title track:

    Worth checking out anyway.

    Best Wishes,

You may be right about Dean Martin. His "Dream with Dean" (1964) album is close, but I find Dean's delivery is too laid back and cool.

Sammy made one that's a good fit ... just him accompanied by Laurindo Almeida on guitar.

Wow this one sounds great - unfortunately every cd copy I’ve located so far has shot up to collectors prices - $80 or $90 - hopefully I can find a good vinyl copy
