How many albums can you think of where there was a single from it with a certain catchy sound or major hit from the album so you bought the album and was disappointed with the rest of it in that the other songs didn't have much in common with the main track? Here's one:

10cc - Original Soundtrack (single: "I'm Not In Love")

There must be a ton more...

Lucifer's Friend, Banquet had a song, "Our World Is A Rock And Roll Band" on the American LP release, but not on my German LP or Repertoire CD.

I'm not sure if this song was released as a single for the American market, but it sure doesn't fit in with the rest of the album, which displays some great progressive-jazzy hard rock.

One of my top 10 fav albums, since the first time I heard it (ca. 1980)!

Dancing in the Moonlight by King Harvest. Nothing else on the LP sounds remotely like the hit title track--which could easily be mistaken for Van Morrison.

I agree. Discoteque is better than anything else on the album.

I always thought that Suzanne Vega's "Blood Makes Noise" sounds nothing like the rest of the album "99.9 Farenheit Degrees"

David Bowie - Diamond Dogs. Rebel, Rebel (though a great song) has nothing to do with this album.

STORIES-ABOUT US-"Brother Louie" is nothing like the rest of the album, but then, that's why it's not on the original pressing.(It was added to the album after it became a surprise hit.)
Another obvious one is "Sloop John B."-which as good as it is,doesn't belong on PET SOUNDS,which is probably why Brian stuck it after "Let's Go Away For Awhile"(after pressure from Capitol to include it on the album.)

I second that. Speaking of which was anyone as annoyed as I was when they put a crappy remix of "Discotheque" on their second GH album instead of the original version?

I certainly was. I never bought "Pop". I thought the album was terrible. I was ticked off when they used a remix on the last GH album.

I think this song gets more and more dated every year. Staring At The Sun, Please and a bunch of other songs are way better than this IMHO.

The three singles from Jewel's first album sound very different from the other tracks on the album.

    Two that came to mind:

Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys -- at Capitol's insistence, Brian Wilson tacked on "Sloop John B," already out as a single, to the end of side 1. Though sonically it fits, thematically it doesn't.

Thriller by Michael Jackson -- the first single, "The Girl Is Mine" with Paul McCartney, is atypical of the rest of the album, thank goodness.

Didn't Jackson tend to release the duff "tender ballad" as the first single from his albums, then fairly quickly, counter with the albums big upbeat funky cut as the second single. Seems to me, he had a couple of songs in the top ten simultaneously because of that.

I always thought he did that to lower expectations for the new album, then surprise everyone with a really great track to build excitement back up.

The Girl Is Mine is one of the worst songs ever!

That is not really true. There is (according to the liner notes for the 1999 mono/stereo twofer) an early track listing for Pet Sounds from February 1966 which includes Sloop John B. (and Good Vibrations), before Sloop John B. was even released as a single.

Beat me to it. I worked in a Sam Goody’s when this came out. Many people who did not like heavy rock bands bought this album thinking it would contain more songs like More Than Words. I tried to warn them, but most ignored the advice.

The single 'Dust In The Wind' has a very different sound compared to the other tracks on this album. My little sister bought this album because of the single and was slightly disappointed :sigh:

HW-61, although most songs on it are superb. Like a Rolling Stone was recorded with different players and a different producer. It is closer to the previous album which featured those players and that producer. Yet it works quite nicely.

    Can't forget Kiss' Destroyer album.

Even though the first two singles were fairly typical Kiss, "Shout It Out Loud" and "Detroit Rock City," it was only when the second single was flipped that they had a Top 10 single. That song, of course, was "Beth."
