Each to their own. For me UYI I and UYI II bulit one album. They belong together.

    Besides ;-)

In terms of Yesterdays I agree. This is why I bracketed the song title.

Look no further than Chicago 19. This one spawned four top 10 hits! It is by far their ‘softest’ album with two Diane Warren tunes (the first two). Too many power ballads for my taste, but still a great band.

We have an odd situation here.
Love songs, are not necessarily ballads, and ballads are not necessarily love songs.

A ballad is not a slow, sentimental and romantic song.

A ballad is a poem or song that narrates a story in short stanzas.

Tom Petty Into The Great Wide Open would be an example.

I guess you could throw in all 3 singles from Linda Ronstadt’s Cry Like A Rainstorm, Howl Like The Wind. All performed with Aaron Neville.

    1. Don’t Know Much
    2. All My Life
    3. When Something’s Wrong With My Baby

This depends on which dictionary definition you ascribe to. As with many words, time has a way of altering meanings from what they originally meant to what is deemed acceptable in a given period. The OP has stated, albeit after the fact, that he's looking specifically for love songs and that's his right even if it does cut down the length of the thread. I can accept the parameters.

That's fine, but any redefinition of ballad that means love song is incorrect.

A ballad is a story, by definition. A love song can be a ballad, but most aren't.

Ballad or not, "slow, sentimental and romantic song" is what I was looking for, with the extra provision of being devotional, which almost forces it to be first-person.

Still have my vinyl copy somewhere.

I understand why the record company picked the singles they did, but in an alternate world, Heart in Pieces and Runaround would’ve been giant hit singles.

What's the difference between "Gloria Estefan", and "Miami Sound Machine"? One is an adult contemporary artist...the other is a pop artist. Other good examples here, although most are not derived from bands originally called, "...Sound Machine".

Adult Contemporary is a different animal when it comes to "singles". I'm at least glad the OP stipulated singles, rather than just "hits".

Obviously I know Adult Contemporary is technically another radio format rather than just an illegitimate flavor of "pop" - worked in it about a third of my career - but most people confuse the two, because there are different flavors of AC: "Hot AC", being the trickiest. That's the one that claims to play "ALL the hits...[I[without the-_____-" sloganeering.

Along Comes A Woman is one of the more upbeat tracks on that album!

Funny thing is singles and hits usually are the same thing when "love ballads" (for lack of a more accurate, precise term). Nobody ever did try to answer why record companies haven't mined that well more. Maybe there's nobody these days who writes love songs for others the way Diane Warren for example did in her prime.

There needs to be some quality control in this thread. There needs to be some even slightly agreed-on parameters of what a ballad is, If this is a ballad... I can't even come up with a second half for this sentence. OK, if it's a ballad... sorry, I still got nothing.

I also don't think of it as a ballad (and I do like the song).

use your illusion should have been one album with tons of outtakes, or solo/side albums for the tracks that are practically solo songs already.

Wrong thread. This thread is not about what UYI should or could have been.
