Finally got around to buying John Foxx' Metamatic box set. The extra disc is surprisingly worthy of repeat listens.

That said, I've the original Vinyl, the first CD, the 2-disc CD, and not the 3-CD version.

The new set is good. The box is nice, and the music great. Sadly though, the booklet is style over substance. I'd of loved to have had some historical information in there, or actually anything with Foxx talking about the album. Instead it's essentially lyrics only...... Oh well, I guess that's for the next edition.

I agree. I am obsessed with this album as well. The US Sterling TJ vinyl sounds incredible (as do the non-Sterling copies). One of my local stores usually sells original copies for $3-$4 so I pick up clean copies just for fun. With the new Police box I am apparently up to 15 :)

I've been so obsessed with Paul McCartney's RAM and Todd Rundgren's A Wizard A True Star that I even look for albums by other artists/bands that have similar sound/style/atmosphere.

Gonna end up recording albums like these two myself.

It's Better To Travel is wonderful for an '80s record. Maybe a bit over-crisp and slightly has that "pinched" mid-'80s EQ, but it's also got a nice warm bottom (no snickering, you perverts!), no shrillness, and a nice blend of acoustic and electronic instruments. The reverb is nice as well - not too dry, no gimmicky '80s wackiness, either. And the synths for the most part aren't overwhelmed by that gauzy, low-bitrate, low-sample rate haze that can be so grating on many records from that era. You get a bit of them, but they're nicely offset by warmer acoustics and so instead of being a sonic assault, provide for interesting layering of different kinds of sounds instead.

Fast becoming my favourite box set of Dylans
If I had heard this when it was recorded probably would not have liked it at all
But the singing is as impassioned as anything Bob’s ever done
Songs take on a life of their own despite a lot of suss writing
    Great band as well

Excellent list overall. And not necessarily "the best" of the bunch... but the one that that always gets my blood percolating is Sam Live at The Harlem Square Club.

I'm obsessed with Pete Wiggs and Bob Stanley present Paris in the Spring. It's forced me to listen to around 100 hours of similar music ... and I've only scratched the surface.

Agree. That Lucky Old Sun is a masterpiece. After I heard "Rio Grande" from Brian's first solo album, I wondered what a whole album of that stuff would sound like. I always thought he might have what it took to pull off another Smile or another Pet Sounds. That Lucky Old Sun is about the closest he's come to a combination of the two.
