The Replacements: Don't Tell A Soul. Hated by many because of large production, but it contains some of their strongest songs, the flow of the album is smooth and exciting at the same time. Well, maybe I'm biased because it's their first record for me back in '88. In any case, I often go back to it and it's a gift that keeps on giving. Also it was fantastic to hear Portland when it came out for the first time on the expanded disc and discovering how a part of that song ended up in Talent Show. It's an album that I really find close to my heart. I guess it still shows :)

I'd put it pretty high in my top 10. There aren't really any songs I disliked (besides maybe one of the last three, can't remember). The only thing that brings it down is the crappy compressed mix. EDIT: Meant to specify A Bigger Bang.

I've never understood the hate for this album. Just because they got serious? I enjoy Hootenanny but that schtick kinda wears off after a few albums...

Alan Hull's 1975 "Squire". It was the follow up to his "Pipedream" lp and flopped. Apparently it was intended as the soundtrack to a TV special Hull had acted in, and some songs on the album are from this program. It has a nice Lennon bite to it.

I guess there is nothing rational in the hate that some feel about this record. Some complain about the big production, which I can understand, but most of the other MatsHeads, especially older guys who knew them from the get go, didn't like that Bob was kicked out.

Yeah, but that Paul guy knew how to write really good songs. And even though Bob was a great guitar player, there's only so many drunken noisefests that a discography needs.

They were actually drinking and drugging more during that period.

Chris Mars: "Funny thing was, after Bob left, it got worse with Tommy and Paul, and it was to the point where I was afraid that they wouldn’t wake up the next day.”

I didn't know that. It's funny how perception is slanted by our opinions of a particular recording. I saw them on their All Shook Down tour when they were sober, and a bunch of jerkoffs in the audience kept on shouting "have a drink". It was too bad, they were sounding great. I had countless bootlegs and never heard them sound so tight or on top of their instruments.

I've played this one frequently in the three years I've owned it. Sure the live portion is loose, but that's what's part of its charm.

I agree to an extent. Duke I used to love to death but really the songwriting on that one is a bit haphazard, I feel as if it doesn't flow well and there are too many filler tracks. Has a few standouts which save it though. Nursery Cryme took me awhile to warm up to, but I love it now. Foxtrot is my least favorite out of the 70s Genesis albums. It's still good, just my least favorite out of Trespass-And Then There Were Three.
