I always loved Red Rose Speedway!
Never understood why it is so poorly rated...

Well I don't like it but my feelings aren't exactly irrational I think.

I love every other Replacements record including All Shook Down.

Don't Tell a Soul I have problems with. I'm glad it exists. I even find it fascinating. It's what a band predicated on not giving a ****, and thumbing their noses at the 1980s, sounds like when they try accommodating themselves to success and the decade. It seems to me a fantastic failure, a new kind of failure for a band that loved to fail.

It doesn't bother me than Bob's not there. Some situations are just impossible.

The production is horrible but I can overcome even that. "I'll Be You" and "Talent Show" I consider great, great songs, and they manage to transcend all the weird, "what instrument is that?" type noises. That said, the songs would have been better with a more straightforward production.

To me, something seems amiss with the songwriting. It has moments of brilliance of course--"We can't hold our tongues/ At the top of our lungs"--but they just don't quite add up. I don't think the Mats or Westie "sold out" or anything. There was just some mismatch between ambition and execution. As I said, All Shook Down I consider a great record and a fitting end to the Mats' run.

RRS was Paul gearing up for Band On The Run. It's a really good album.

A few that leap to mind:

BACK TO THE EGG by McCartney and Wings is in my top five Macca releases.

OOH LA LA by The Faces got panned when it came out, but I prefer it to NOD/WINK and LONG PLAYER.

MIND GAMES by John Lennon is my favorite to put on to listen to just for pleasure; it is undemanding, and a solid listen from start to finish without the peaks and valleys of other records.

YOU'RE GONNA GET IT by Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers is my second favorite--DAMN THE TORPEDOES is still #1 for me.

TEMPLE OF LOW MEN by Crowded House is a favorite that didn't seem to do well critically.

Bob Welch era Fleetwood Mac, especially Future Games and Bare Trees.

Also the original Deep Purple lineup. I especially love Book Of Taliesyn and S/T. I find the mark 1 lineup infinitely more interesting than the various head-banger permutations that followed.

KISS - '(Music From) The Elder'
Miles Davis - 'On The Corner' (realizing that it's "cred" has increased as time has passed...)

It seems to me that SF Sorrow is the most-touted Pretty Things album, but my favourite is Parachute, and I would also choose the Philippe DeBarge album over SF Sorrow.

I've always had a soft spot for Neil Young's Harvest Moon which is not an overwhelming fan favorite but has beautiful songs and production. Especially for the 90s!

I recently burned a greatest hits 2 CD set. I often do this because my favorites are often different than the singles. It's a great set but because this's first three records are littered with so many great songs, and because that early era produced some great b-sides, I had to be really selective. From the albums post "Be Here Now", I found the only worthy absolute musts to be Songbird and Go Let It Out.
