  1. There's no beating it. It's called life and in order to beat it you have to die at the end.

I totally admire his spirit, though! Big props. He's always seemed like a nice guy, full of laughs, and smart as hell.

  2. Stage 4 Pancreatic used to mean 'get your affairs in order, you got 6 months'.

Current treatments, by the best, can extend your life to 3-5 years.

But you need to get to the best, I hope Alex is seeing the best pancreatic CA specialists he can find, he can certainly afford it.

I've had a horrible day and this is the icing on the cake. So sad. As an avid Jeopardy watcher I'm really torn up about this. I admire his courage and pull for him.

  5. I'm not trying to crack wise- much, much respect to Alex - it prompts a deeper question, though, probably one that only Alex can answer.

Still, 3 years minimum puts Alex at 81 and at a max he makes it to 83. To get there, though, he'll half to go through hell (from what I'm told).

I'm just thinking about forum member @JBStephens who just passed away, and what he said about getting a lot of painful treatment just to add a little more to his life: "The juice isn't worth the squeeze."

We have this standard, right? I'm 45 so someone dying at 20 years old is a tragedy. Alex is 78 and if he heard of someone's death at 42 he might call that tragic.

Is the guy at 83 going to think that the guy who dies at 78 is so much of a tragedy, though? Maybe. I'm looking for the line in the sand.

That's what Wilko Johnson had after initially being given 10 months to live with his initial diagnosis.

    Good luck to you, Alex.

Steve Jobs as well. If he had immediately gone into treatment rather than all of the "alternative" stuff he tried first, Jobs would very likely still be alive.

Horrible news. My step-mother had this and her time from diagnosis was very short.

Alex is clearly most remembered for his many great years on "Jeopardy", but I first remember him on NBC's "High Rollers", back when I was a teenager.

Just like everything Alex does so professionally, the man actually suited up on the "Jeopardy" set to share this sad news with all of us and that he really wants to try and beat it. Just like everyone else, I hope that he can do it!

For those of you, who didn't sit on the floor watching television back in 1975, I'll share with you what I used to witness on a fairly regular basis ...

In my student days, I used to watch Reach For The Top which was a televised high school show in Ontario which Alex hosted. I even attended a live taping to cheer on my school team.
Of course, I've watched Jeopardy! pretty regularly.
And I was pleasantly surprised to hear his voice narrating a short history of Hearst Castle on a visit there a couple of years ago.
    All the best to Alex.

I heard about this on the ride home this afternoon. Sad news. Alex is an all around class act.

Gotta give him props for his humour. To paraphrase: "I'm going to beat this thing. I have to, I still have three years left in my contract"

True...Remember a while back when the network had Pat Sajak and Alex trade shows? That didn't work out well.

NEVERMIND...I looked it up and that was a one-time 1997 April Fool's joke.

Yes, that displayed a bit of grim humour, a glimpse of his frame of mind.

Yep my mom was diagnosed last year March 1st with stage 4 stomach and pancreas. Died on May 3rd. Sort of a catch 22, the suffering was a short length of time, but it was intense. No good way to die of cancer I suppose. It's a cruel disease.

Sucks...my decades long faithful daily dose of "Jeopardy" won't be the same if he doesn't survive...

Oncologists say a man can survive 30 yrs after being diagnosed with the disease...

    Regardless it still sucks

My father died from this 2 years ago at 90. He was 88 when diagnosed and already losing weight and muscle tone. Dad wanted nothing to do with chemo or radiation, and the Dr. said surgery would involve removing his spleen and at least 1 rib. At his age chances of survival were nil. The anesthesia alone would likely have killed him.

Trebek seems to be in reasonably good shape for his age, but it'll be a long haul.

He's a goner, probably before 2020. And I say that from experience, nuff said.
Poor man, I really hope he doesn't suffer a lot. This is just so terrible.
