I assume it's a combination of bad record deals and bad management over the years. I assume the last few years of the band it was everything Bert could do to keep them healthy and on the road that there was no time to worry about trying to round up all of the archive stuff.

Did they ever play Please Call Home live? If they did, it was only a few times (& not on any of my ABB collection, though a version may well be "out there")

Anyway, add Oh Pretty Woman (Berry Oakley sung) to the list.

According to setlist.fm, the 1st setlist that shows Please Call Home on it was in 1989.

Cheers - so, in the context of Duane-era setlists, we can chalk that one off.

1969 includes a bunch of those one-off covers from the Jacksonville Armory show, 03/30/69 (NB. Hasn't this recently been re-dated??) - Gregg wasn't there, so it doesn't feel as though they should count.

Layla in 1971 was nothing more than a very brief instrumental jam/quote leading into Revival in the recently-unearthed Montreal show on September 3rd - again, not sure it counts personally, but here it is anyway at 59:30...

I know a gray market release came out, but I don't think that date that they tag that show with is correct. There was a Jacksonville show on 3/30, but Gregg was back from California with the band on 3/26 if all of the stories are correct.

My statement was in regards to the sound quality of the recordings rather than the presentation etc of the material.
Getting these as CD's in Australia is difficult & expensive even more so with the ridiculous shipping costs added on top. I only have a few of these releases on CD. All of which were purchased through 3rd party vendors rather than directly from Munck Music.

Didn’t realize the original band never performed Please Call Home. Guess I was thinking of solo Gregg, and later ABB lineups.

Thanks for that, and Oh, Pretty Woman (Albert King’s song, not Roy Orbison’s) too. I think I included that one in that other thread where we tried to name them all, but forgot it here.

    We need ‘em all!

Oh, and who wouldn’t love 12/31/73 (Cow Palace)? That might be tricky, given all the guest stars, but what a show! No idea if actual HQ tapes exist, outside of the FM recordings that circulate.

The following night (1/1/74, with John Lee Hooker) would be cool too. Again, if good tapes exist. I found what circulates pretty disappointing, soundwise.

This is just shows/setlists that are known? I mean, the band certainly played more than a handful of shows in 1969-70??

Seems like this is a thread for experienced Allmans collectors and I am not. However, in case some of you don't know Owsley Stanley recorded both the Dead and the Allmans at Fillmore East that February weekend in 1970. His Allman recordings are available here: Bears Sonic Journals - Owsley Stanley Foundation The Grateful Dead recordings appear on the Warners album History of the Grateful Dead Bear's Choice and Dick's Picks Volume 4. I only recently found out about Bear's Sonic Journals and there's some excellent stuff there in addition to The Allman Brothers.

Oh yes... The “Bear” ABB recordings are wonderful. Even though each night misses some of the music, what’s there is remarkable. Shame we don’t have more ABB in that same quality.

Also a shame the GD camp hasn’t followed suit and given us all three nights of the same run. We have much of it on Bear’s Choice and DP4, but now that every surviving note of the ABB shows is out there (And DP4 is out of print anyhow) the GD need to step it up and offer us the same.

    Take my money, dammit!

I specifically stayed away from this because I knew the sound was going to suck. Reviews confirmed.

Right. The site lists tons of more shows, but they just don't have setlists for them. Most people weren't writing down setlists back in 1970, and if they were it's not likely they kept those notes for 50 years. So we are limited by what info survived.

Not to go too far off topic but since we are discussing Allman Brothers archives...
has there been any news on Gregg's solo albums getting the deluxe treatment? The Laid Back deluxe was so great that I really want the rest of them to get the same treatment.

This is my gut feeling too. Given the poor quality of the last 2 releases—The Last Note and Down in Texas—I just can’t see how they’d have much else of releasable quality left in the archives.

This right here is an argument for a compilation rather than full shows. There are two of the Warren/Woody era already and they’re great, First and Second Set.

A compilation across eras would be awesome IMNSHO.

Way back in the late 90s, when the ABB first released the Feb 2/70 Fillmore cd, Dick Latvala and Kirk West were discussing an RFK box set with both bands. Then Dick passed and I don’t think I’ve even seen a rumor about it since.

I don’t know about the Dead’s sets, but I think those ABB shows are tremendous. 1973 was such a wonderful year for the band.

I’ve done a lot of digging on this and here’s what I found.

documentation of 1969 is really spotty. Not just setlists, but shows in general. 1970 shows are a bit better, though it’s not until May that things get really solid. Willie Perkins kept a hand-written calendar once he took over, and that pretty much covers the 1970 paid shows. The free shows in the parks are documented only by attendee recollections and occasional photographs.

Phil Walden’s booking operation got itself in order by 1971 and Willie has monthly accountings of each gig from Jan 1971 until the first breakup in 1976.

There’s also scant recorded documentation of 1969 live…the Jax “Second Coming” show, the April demos at Redwal (soon to be Capricorn), the May Central City Park gig in Macon, the first album (no outtakes that I’ve found), and Peach Cobbler 6, which is the famous one-hour “Mountain Jam.” @andyvannoy has the actual date of that.

Ps: the “300 shows a year” quote isn’t accurate. They *were* on the road much of 1969 and for 300 days in 1970, but they didn’t play 30” shows.

okay, that’s enough ABB nerddom for y’all for today.
