    My alternate PAC&J:

    Side A
    1. Salesman
    2. She Hangs Out
    3. Love Is Only Sleeping
    4. Words
    5. Cuddly Toy
    6. Don't Call on Me (w/o lounge intro and outro)
    7. Goin' Down (single mix)
    Side B
    1. The Door Into Summer
    2. Daydream Believer
    3. What Am I Doin' Hangin' 'Round
    4. Daily, Nightly
    5. Pleasant Valley Sunday
    6. Star Collector (extended version, PAC&J deluxe)

Gone is "Hard to Believe", which I don't really like, and isn't a "real" Monkees track, being only Davy and Kim Calpri, and in is the Daydream Believer single and B-Side, making this great album even greater. I based my tracklist loosely on the real alternate tracklist, making some changes here and there

i really love their first album, i think it is one of the best debuts ever. i don't know if it needs much realigning but the one thing i really wish it did have was at least one song by Peter.

I know, but I meant compared to the rest of the album. The album was recorded by the band, Chip & Eddie, while this song didn't. And didn't they record two songs, Davy and Kim? It's already a "Davy Jones & the Sundowners" single!

Here's my More of the Monkees:
    Side 1:
    1. She
    2. When Love Comes Knockin'
    3. Mary, Mary
    4. Through the Looking Glass
    5. Your Auntie Grizelda
    6. (I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone
    Side 2:
    1. Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow)
    2. The Kind of Girl I Could Love
    3. Valleri
    4. I'll Be Back Upon My Feet
    5. Words
    6. I'm A Believer

I used all the song featured in their first season + "Through the Looking Glass", which Boyce & Hart loved and thought should be their single. And the only album to feature two lead or co-vocals by Peter!

Whoa! I got sidetracked and forgot to respond to this thread until now.

Nice alternate list, D-rock! Did you put the tracks that way to better space out the Nez tracks?

Normally, that's what I'd do. In this case, I kept them in the order they were on GT, minus the classic tracks.

I always thought it was better when the singers' tracks were more spaced out -- but GT showed me that a Monkees album could sound great with a much different structure (heavy on Micky on Side 1, the others on Side 2)!

Also, after a time when this thread had gone dormant, I'm glad to see a lot of people posting their lists again. :)

Glad to see you liked my Monkees series! I've been tinkering a lot with some of the later albums since then, especially The Birds & The Bees album. The version I have up on there is a little too inconsistent for my taste, especially with the overabundance of Davy tracks. Originally, I had "Daydream Believer" and "Goin' Down" on my version of Pisces, but since the majority of Monkees albums had only 12 tracks per album (or 6 tracks per side), I decided to push them off onto my new version of The Birds & The Bees, with the end result being:

THE BIRDS, THE BEES & THE MONKEES
    Side A:
    1. Daydream Believer
    2. War Games
    3. My Share of the Sidewalk (Mike Vocal)
    4. Ceiling in My Room
    5. While I Cry
    6. D.W. Washburn

    Side B:
    1. I'll Be Back Up on My Feet
    2. The Poster
    3. P.O. Box 9847
    4. Magnolia Simms
    5. Valleri
    6. Goin' Down

I believe the hardest part of sequencing alternate Monkee albums is certainly the track listing. Looking at the sequencing for these original albums, the tracks would run in an order based on lead vocalist. So for example, you'd have a side that'd look something like: DAVY-MICKY-MIKE-DAVY-MICKY-MIKE, with each primary member having two tracks per side (with the occasional Peter track thrown in there). You can clearly see this on the second side, as it goes MICKY-DAVY-MICKY-MIKE-DAVY-MICKY. Although Micky has an extra song on this side at Mike's expense, the tracks are arranged in a way so that no two Davy songs are next to each other, likewise with the other two guys. The problems start to come in when you look at the second side. Even with the above track list, the first two tracks are Davy songs, which messes up the desired sequential order. But I really have no other options. If you put Mike's "My Share of the Sidewalk" in-between the two, well then now "War Games" and "Ceiling in My Room" (both Davy tracks) are next to each other. You could put "D.W. Washburn" in-between the two, but that also breaks the other tradition of having the single open/close the side (although I guess "Valleri" kinda contradicts this). Plus, "D.W. Washburn" works a whole lot better as a side closer. There's also "While I Cry", but it's somber, melancholic tone fits much better near the end of Side A. Overall, I think my alternate Birds & The Bees album will always be a little clunky, but I guess it's the price I have to pay in order to have a consistent, incredible-sounding alternate version of Head:

    HEAD
    Side A:
    1. Porpoise Song
    2. Tapioca Tundra
    3. Circle Sky
    4. Can You Dig It?
    5. Writing Wrongs

    Side B:
    1. As We Go Along
    2. Daddy's Song
    3. Auntie's Municipal Court
    4. Long Title: Do I Have to Do This All Over Again?
    5. Zor and Zam

As you can notice, this track-listing certainly breaks the "desired sequential order" mentioned above. But the reason I see this as being so consistent is that it is following an intended theme presented by the music itself. Obviously, half of the songs featured here were never in the movie Head, but with this alternate album, I decided to completely disregard the film, and instead put together a purely psychedelic-tinged album. As Davy's presence dominated the majority of The Birds & The Bees, here, he only has one track on the album. Mike on the other hand, has a total of four, with three of those appearing on the first side. So I guess that leaves Micky to have the most consistent presence on the album, his voice featured on two tracks on Side A, and two tracks on Side B. Even Steven. It's always a work in progress though, I guess I'm just the kind of guy who wants everything here to be just perfect! But yeah, like I said, I hope you all continue to enjoy the stuff I post on my blog!

Just wanna bump this thread, because we haven't seen any activity in a while.

Is anyone else subscribed to the "Zilch" or "Headquarters" groups on FB? People post fantasy lists there from time to time, too.

Here's another thought: Would anyone be interested in a group project -- that is, voting for which songs go on each album? That could be a fun variation on the usual format for us. :)

Very cool! Adding one extra track to the album (kind of like what the Beatles' LPs were like in the U.K.) can change the structure of the albums in fun ways. And telling us which songs you'd use as singles -- that's also a nice twist. :)

Here's something I've been playing around with lately:

Colgems' "The Monkees Greatest Hits" from 1969 is an odd mixed bag. The name isn't even accurate, as it skips a lot of songs that were actually on singles and includes such odd choices as "Zor and Zam." Mike is also strangely ignored on the album, even though he was still with the group at the time. I mean, I like "Zor and Zam," but where are well-loved tunes like "Papa Gene's Blues"?

So, if I had been alive in '69 and in charge of this compilation, I would have titled the album "The Best of the Monkees" (a more subjective idea than "Greatest Hits"), and these are the songs I would have chosen. (I may have already posted a similar list back in the day, but I've made some modifications since then.)

    Side 1

    1. Theme
    2. I'm a Believer
    3. A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You
    4. Papa Gene's Blues
    5. Steppin' Stone
    6. I Wanna Be Free
    7. Pleasant Valley Sunday

    Side 2

    8. Last Train to Clarksville
    9. Valleri (single version)
    10. What am I Doin' Hangin' Round?
    11. Someday Man
    12. Words
    13. Daydream Believer
    14. For Pete's Sake

As with the Colgems album, all of the A-sides are represented on this collection, along with a few of the B-sides, but in this case, I pick several well-known songs from the TV show that seem like more logical choices. The themes bookend the album.

Originally, I had the first side all from the early days and the second side all from the later days, but this time I went for a greater shuffle, while still trying to make sure that the album flowed smoothly from one track to another.

A significant but purposeful omission from my earlier version is "Your Auntie Grizelda." Even though I like the song and want Peter to be represented, I can imagine my hypothetical bosses at Colgems not wanting to spotlight the member of the group who left. Pete still does get a co-vocal on "Words" and a writing credit on "For Pete's Sake." But instead of "Grizelda," I opted for "Someday Man," a terrific song that oddly never got an LP release back in the day. This inclusion gives it a "Then and Now" style appearance (i.e., new material to increase the value of a greatest-hits set).

Even though I prefer the TV version of "I Wanna Be Free" and I like both versions of "Valleri" equally, I chose the versions that were commercially available in 1969.

The original album was not a success, but if the version I listed above had been a bit, I would have released a "Best of the Monkees, Vol. 2" in 1971 that covers some of the missing essential songs:

    Side 1

    1. Mary, Mary
    2. Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow)
    3. You Just May Be the One (album version)
    4. Your Auntie Grizelda
    5. Randy Scouse Git
    6. Sometime in the Morning
    7. Star Collector

    Side 2

    8. Girl I Knew Somewhere
    9. Cuddly Toy
    10. Take a Giant Step
    11. Door into Summer
    12. Shades of Gray
    13. Listen to the Band
    14. Goin' Down

All the remaining B-sides from the TV show era appear on this volume, except for "Tapioca Tundra" which was backed with "Valleri" but never made an appearance on the show itself. Since "Girl I Knew Somewhere" is probably my favorite Monkees song, it's hard to bump it back to the second volume, but it's not just about what songs I like; it's about how well the songs flow with one another. That's why all the B-sides are on Side 2; it's not that I don't want them to be spread out, I just like the way the album flows here.

Other songs frequently heard on the TV show, plus some fan favorites, put in appearances on this disc. Yes, this time we got to "Auntie Grizelda," because it's 1971 and there's no more band at this point, so no one for Colgems to want to exclude.

Again, while I prefer the TV version of "You Just May Be the One," that song wouldn't become commercially available until "Missing Links Vol. 2" in 1990.

While I've seen some controversy online over the meaning of "Cuddly Toy," I'm going to assume the best for now. It's certainly a popular song from the show that frequently showed up in concert and on compilations, probably in part because of the name cache of Harry Nilsson (which is only sensible).

All songs are from the original airing of the show except for "Listen to the Band," which showed up in the Saturday morning reruns. It's a great song that became the anthem for the band in concert. That seems obvious, but I'm just trying to point out why I didn't include any songs from "Head," "Instant Replay" and "Changes," even though there are good songs from all those albums.

Note that both Side 1 and Side 2 open with a Mike-penned song as sung by Micky. I liked the symmetry of that.

I tried making a Vol. 3, with other songs I love -- like "Circle Sky" and "Long Title" -- along with other songs that didn't make it onto a LP at the time -- "D.W. Washburn," "It's Nice to Be With You," "Do It in the Name of Love," and "Lady Jane." But unfortunately, I don't like any of the non-LP songs all that much, and without any singles, the album felt like more of a mishmash than an actual "best-of" collection. So I decided to stop while I was ahead. :)

Does anyone else have any thoughts for what they'd do for a best-of/greatest hits collection?

  20. The Monkees Christmas Album. There is a bootleg but it would be nice to have an official one.

Fair enough. As I said, I went with the songs that were most often repeated on the TV show. Any choice of personal favorites would be a little different.

What would your version of a "Best Of" album look like? That'd be fun to see!

I had gotten the original greatest hits album as a Christmas present from my parents. One of my first albums and I loved it. As a kid, the only songs I didn't like on it was I Wanna Be Free and Shades of Gray. For me personally as that little boy at the time of release, I'd switch them with Papa Gene's Blues and What Am I Doing Hangin' Round. So we agree there. But outside of I'm a Believer, Cuddly Toy was my favorite song on that album at the time.

That's a great memory! I didn't get that one as a Christmas present, but if I had, I think the memories of that one would be special for me too!

And I like your substitutions! I plugged them into the playlist mentally, and it makes for a good album. :)

I can't figure any album to put any version of Prithee on.
