Which 5 (or so) AP jazz SACDs are essential?

  3. The two Nat King Cole SACDs mastered by Steve are absolutely essential. I really like the Sam Cooke one.

Among AP's Blue Note and Impulse SACD offerings, the five most 'well regarded' jazz albums are probably these (in alphabetical order):

    Cannonball Adderley - Somethin' Else
    John Coltrane - Blue Train
    John Coltrane - Love Supreme
    Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage
    Lee Morgan - Sidewinder

Sidewinder was a hit album (because of the title track), but not regarded as Lee Morgan's best outing. It's also not that well recorded (which is the case of most post-1963 Blue Note sessions). And, most importantly, it's not available on SACD ...

I think Art Blakey's "Moanin'" is another safe recommendation.

It seems that this is not marked as a limited time offer, but I doubt these are everyday prices. Anyone know?

These are definitely on sale. An added benefit is avoiding the steep shipping charges at Acoustic Sounds, Elusive Disc, and Music Direct. Buy two at Amazon (or one in the case of the Nats) and shipping is free. Buy one or two at those other places and pay like $7.

Many thanks for the pointer! Got a couple of discs that I didn't have already (the Miles Davis Seven Steps and pre-ordered the Oliver Nelson Blues & Abstract Truth).

Definitely agree that the NKC's are absolutely as essential as any music purchase can be. I'd also add the Mingus x 5 disc. It's not the best-recorded disc in the world, but the content is amazing and I love the way the SACD sounds (i.e., how clearly you can hear the sub-par aspects of it).

They're all so expensive. What's the deal with these? They're imports?

Thanks to Planbee for the pointer and to others for their suggestions.

I already have the released NKC titles (and can't wait for the remaining titles to come out). I went ahead and purchased:

Grant Green - Green Street (I have, and really like, Idle Moments)
Bill Evans - Waltz For Debby
    John Coltrane - Blue Train
    Sam Cooke - Night Beat
Humble Pie - Smokin' (I'm curious why no one's mentioned this as an essential "jazz" title ;))

I've added a couple more to my Wishlist, just in case we get lucky and this sale lasts for awhile).

These are not releases I've kept up with... I'd love to have them all, but they're an expensive habit, even at these sale prices.

    Thanks again!
    Ivan

I've had the Waltz for Debby SACD for years and am a big fan. Some on the forum prefer other versions, though. His Moonbeams SACD seems to be the preferred digital version. I'll have to crack open the SACD someday to see if it beats out my opened XRCD.

I figured this has to be a limited sale. The regular prices for some titles are listed at $33. That seems to be high. Does Amazon actually list them at that price?

After buying four titles yesterday, I went back and ordered the following:

    Kenny Burrell Midnight Blue
    Kenny Dorham Whistle Stop
    CCR self-titled
    CCR Mardi Gras
    Sam Cooke Night Beat

Now I'll have all the CCR SACDs, finally.

Many of these titles are from 2002. I'm not sure who mastered them. The ones from 2010 are mastered by Steve or Kevin Gray and are likely to be rated better than the '02 titles. Of course, the CCR titles are older and were mastered by Steve.

I guess this is one of his great masterwork and is underrated.

Oliver Nelson is on my list. I've never been able to get too deep into straight ahead jazz (fusion is my thang) but "Stolen Moments" is a gorgeous tune...I'm sure the SACD will make it sparkle.

  22. Amazon has never discounted the releases from the audiophile distributors very much. Most of them in the sale are as cheap from Amazon as they have ever been.

The Nat King Coles have a higher list no matter where you look. I don't really follow the many related threads here, so I'm not sure why. Maybe it's due to a higher licensing fee, or maybe because they're still a pretty sure bet to sell at a higher price point.

It will be my first version of this album, and probably my last. :)

I had been holding on many of these discs at $30 each. This is a great deal, especially with the free shipping over $25.
