another wonderful band that will never see the welcome mat to the rock hall..........but tupac shakur and the sex pistols are in.

    you figure it out

p.s. - gerry beckley's solo albums are also very good.

America wasn't influential like Tupac and Sex Pistols. Entry into the Hall OF Fame have to meet that requirement. You figure it out.

They should just change it to the "jann wenner hall of fame"

Supertramp isn't on there, America, etc etc.... But rap? Sure, tons!

They gave up on this after the Harbor album, only to call their next album "Silent letter " .
In the eighties , when most of their albums didn't include self-penned songs , they gave up on this idea and released 4 albums with different initial letters (Alibi,View from the ground, Perspective,Your move) before picking up the "H" again with their last three (and very strong) albums Hourglass, Human nature and Here & Now.

Also Dan Peek's Christian albums are quite tasty.

I've always said so. Dragon was a keyboard whiz and Toni and her sisters were all great singers. They were all class A studio cats.
Add to that that Toni Tenille was ten years older than we all believed.

Had a lot more than just "two really good albums". Have you heard all of their catalog?

Gerry Beckley did some collobarative work with Chicago's Robert Lamm as well as with Lamm and The Beach Boy's Carl Wilson...

I know you're being sarcastic but trust me, those two artists were wildly influential. You can make extremely good records without originating a style, which was the case with America.

Not all of it but enough to form an opinion. I have the first five albums, "Your Move" and "King Biscuit Floer Hour". I also had "History" and "The Complete Greatest Hits" plus I have a couple of songs I like on digital.

I'm a major fan; always have been. Last time I saw them up here in Ontario they did a
signing session afterwards. I didn't line up but if I had I would have asked these two
questions - `Gerry, where did you get those jeans?' and `Dewey, when are you going to
put out a solo album?'. I highly recommend Dan Peek's book if you have not read it. And
I recently got from the UK the new `live at the Whiskey 1972' but have not spun it yet.

I think most people will agree that the first five are the best , the late 70's and 80's albums are all patchy , but, as I said before they returned to great form with their last three studio albums, my favourite is the last one Here & Now from 2009, which has a bonus live greatest hits cd - highly recommended

Neil Young reportedly described them as three guys trying to imagine what it was like to be on acid.

Randy Newman once said, as soon as he heard "the heat was hot" he new it would be a hit.

Haha never heard those quotes, but yeah, in addition to being a blatant Neil Young vocal rip off, the lyrics to “Horse with No Name” might’ve been written by a third grader.

“There were plants and birds and rocks and things”

“There ain’t no one for to give ya no pain”

    Lol, seriously?

Agree about the first five albums, which I'd rate in this order.
    1. America
    2. Hat Trick
    3. Homecoming
    4. Hearts
    5. Holiday

I stopped buying America albums after the sixth, Hideaway, which I thought was awful. The only albums I've heard after this are 'Here and Now' and a compilation of their Capitol albums, which I bought mainly for 'You Can Do Magic'.

Yeah, the lyrics veer between WTF and nothing to write home about, but who cares about lyrics anyway when those first five albums have loads of great tunes. FWIW, my top America deep cuts (12, so each writer can have four):
    Three Roses (Bunnell)
    Here (Beckley)
    Donkey Jaw (Peek)
    Clarice (Beckley)
Everyone I Meet is From California (Peek)
Till the Sun Comes Up Again (Beckley)
    Cornwall Blank (Bunnell)
    It's Life (Peek)
    Rainbow Song (Bunnell)
Mad Dog (Beckley's great pastiche of a pastiche, that being McCartney throwback music hall songs)
    Half a Man (Peek)
    People in the Valley (Bunnell)

That looks about right to me. I sure wish/hope we got/get an audiophile mastering of Hat Trick and Holiday.

What songs did Dan Peek sing lead on besides "Lonely People" and "Don't Cross the River"?

I think those were the only hits he sang lead on, except "Today's The Day." His song "Woman Tonight" also made the greatest hits album.
