If the team who did YSS did Pepper 50, it would have been listenable. Too much bass and compression ruined it.
It was a slip up from a late night post. The numerous keyboard slips in my original post speak to that But let's make it correct.
This is a fun listen for me because it is so different. Right, wrong, intentional or accident, the album stands apart because it was a fresh approach to songs I had listened to growing up watching the movie on TV. Yellow Submarine was the first cassette I bought with my own money. Because of the cassette, I always expect Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds to start side two. Eight year old me would have loved to have this version because it contains all the songs from the film. For what it's worth, I love the George Martin score too!
Very true. And before 2009, the 1987 cd's were hated all over. Now they are regarded very highly. Typical revisionist-hipster-ism.
I like it. This and Anthology 2 are the only two posthumous releases that I like that have remixed Beatles material.
You gotta report a post in the thread to the Gorts to bring it to their attenti0n and get them to change a thread title - they don't read every thread. I've gone ahead and forwarded your request.
... And before anyone busts me, I've been part of the mob at times. But I still prefer the 2009s, generally speaking; and enjoy the remix projects for what they are: entertaining, and not part of the canon.
I have the CD since about 15 years and still love it. Great alternative to the original mixes. And, IMO of course, the Pepper tracks there sound a bit better than the 50th Anniversary remix. The mastering on the new one is too brickwalled. Sorry Giles.
A favorite! Sounds terrific and I love the direction they took for those remixes. A breath of fresh air compared to the Giles Martin treatment, IMHO.
I pulled my CDs and listened back and forth a few times. I don't think we're hearing NR on the 1999, just that for 2017 Giles has brought up all the elements further and maybe added some top end. Especially the brushes.
The 1999 mix has all tail-signs of heavy noise reduction. Very audible, and it sucked the complete atmosphere from the room. Also, it's easily to see in a frequency analysis.
Funny how opinions can be so different! I do not like the “Hey Bulldog” remix AT ALL! Towards the end-the “What did you say? I said ‘Ruff’” bit- the original fades the music down to highlight this silly and improvised exchange. On the YSS, everything is the same volume and destroys the dynamic. You’d think someone who was really familiar with the material would have done the remix.
Ok. When I compare WALHFMF, though, it's the Pepper 50 version that feels flatter with all the elements cranked up. The YSS version just pops more. Maybe it's a matter of a quieter tune like WI64 benefitting more from the compression. But I'm not an NR expert. I just feel a greater emotional impact for the first three Pepper songs on YSS.
