RIP Mean Gene. One of the reasons I got into Pro Wrestling in my youth. Just so enjoyable to watch and listen to. He and Bobby “The Brain/Weasel” Heenan were hilarious.
RIP to a true legend. I urge anyone to check out YouTube for many classic clips from the golden era but here's a funny one for the moment:
Well you know Mean Gene..............we're gonna miss you! Count me as another '80s kid who grew up watching him in WWF. Got to see him in person a few times when WCW Nitro would broadcast from the Palace of Auburn Hills. RIP
RIP Mean Gene. I grew up on his voice. Let me tell you something Mean Gene.... At least, he is joining Heenan and the others: what party will they have up there.
Anybody check out this year’s New Japan Wrestle Kingdom yet? Highest recommendation. Among the many highlights: Jericho continuing to bring the goods at an improbably late high point (match quality-wise) in an already excellent career.
You guys should check out the Something To Wrestle With Bruce Prichard podcast- he and Conrad are a lot of fun to listen to. Something to Wrestle with Bruce Prichard
I was a fan of the early shows but it has just become a retread in the past 12 months. That and the ridiculous arguments that don't add anything to the show.
Nice tribute to Mean Gene this week. Had me thinking about Gene going to WCW. I didn't have cable at the time so I missed out on a lot of the early rise of WCW and I just found this:
Watched it and New Year's Dash - was sort of surprised at how little happened for a NYD event. On the other hand, the big show should have been called "WRESTLE KINGDOM 13: Hey Elite, don't let the door hit you in the butt on the way out!"
Another fine tribute from the WWE production guys. (Sadly, they have to put them together far too often...) A minor quibble is I'd have liked a "MEEEEEEEEEEEAAAANNN... WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO... BYYY GOOOODDDD GEEEEENE!" from Flair in WCW in there. Still, great video.
Very nice tribute last night. I tuned in to Raw for the first time in like a decade just to see it. Sad so many great people from the world of wrestling are no longer with us.
Yes, it was an excellent tribute. I think the saddest part is realising that so, so many people featured in it are no longer with us.
Something else I did not know (and it was said on Bruce's podcast) was that the name "Mean Gene" came from Jesse Ventura. It was from an interview where Jesse said he was hanging out with Tom Petty and he asked Gene if he knew who he was. Gene said something like "Yeah a race car driver". And Jesse's response was "that was mean, Gene".
