That’s funny! To each their own I guess. I was never into Genesis, so don’t feel qualified to rate their music. But I always liked that song...but then again, I’m a drummer.
He's one of the greats, in my book. Yes, he lost his way after 'Both Sides', but his early solo albums are uniformally great. 'Hello, I Must Be Going!' in particular is one of my favourite albums of all time. And, for me, Genesis became essential listening only after they became a trio. 'ATTW3' and 'Invisible Touch' are especially good. He's made scores of fabulous records. I can kind of see why some prog devotees and people who got fed up with his cheeky chappy omnipresence during the 1980s would think differently, but I love him. His autobiography is also a charming read, if a little light on musical insight. His personal life is a never-ending car crash, though.
I’ve always liked Phil Collins. There was a culture in the UK - or at least, so it appeared to me - that his music was bland and vapid. The guy could write great pop songs and was also a superb drummer. Ok I don’t agree with his politics but I don’t listen to his politics. Here’s a question: how would Genesis have fared without him?
They made one album without him - Calling All Stations - then split when the album failed. Notably Ray Wilson, the replacement vocalist, was not part of the big documentary that they all contributed to a few years ago.
Phil was such a good writer partly due to his years of arranging the complex structures for all the Genesis tracks. To some degree there would be a fair argument to suggest without Collins helping the guys arrange the tracks, many would not have made it in the form we're familiar with.... or at all
Wife saying he hasn't had a wash for a year? Phil Collins' ex-wife says he's going back on word to give her mansion
Two out of three of my favorite albums ever include him on drums. No Genesis...No solo stuff. His work with others is in a category of his own.... almost. Fripp and Collins have done better on other's albums than their own, IMO.
A man of many talents, but he remains in my mind the finest fusion/rock drummer England has produced, as evidenced on 'The Lamb..." album/tour, Live At The Rainbow 1973, Genesis Live, Second's Out, Brand X, the very underrated "ATTWT"......, and many other examples.
Slow news day at Sky (it was a bank holiday in the UK) Scientists identify "The Phil Collins Effect" (PCE) https://news.sky.com/story/the-phil-collins-effect-older-pop-stars-given-hope-by-former-genesis-singers-cultural-resurrection-12321389#:~:text=Academics have since identified a,last year, The Times reports.
When Phil was a kid - his Mom was someone who acted as a child talent agent. Phil was playing (in a playground with other kids as well) with a slightly younger than him kid named “Jack Wild”. Phil’s Mom told Jack to try out for TV etc ….Jack was the artful Dodger in the “Oliver!” movie (based in the play) and was in H.R. Puffnstuff among others… ‘Aside: ‘Did you know H.R. stood for Highness Royal and not hand rolled?’
I just played No Jacket Required the other night and it's a really solid album. Hadn't played it in a while.
I watched the 1969 film "I Start Counting" last week, and thought the guy selling ice cream (on the right) looked familiar.
