Apparently "Here Comes the Sun" is the most popular Beatles song with millennials. Huh?!?

I’m actually a bigger fan of Think For Yourself than Here Comes The Sun! Both top tunes haha

And John has been going down steadily since the early eighties.

It's interesting to see how these 'social preferences' change over time. Four decades ago, most people would have considered Sgt. Pepper the 'best' Beatles album. Now probably it's either Revolver, Abbey Road or the White Album.
A few years ago many people were asked whether John or Paul was their favorite Beatle, and John was still in the lead, but I'm sure it will be reversed in not so many years to come.

But so far, the album that by far has received the most attention for its 50th anniversary was Sgt. Peppers.

I've heard a young person suddenly break out and sing the meme "Hello darkness my old friend".

Of course it's not annoying. Such a great song... and it's surprising. Thought a Paul or John sung track would 'win' instead.

    Why surprising?

George really gets such little respect ...

I agree. But still, it is surprising. There's so much more popular Beatle tracks.
If it's a George one, even 'Something' could've been the winner. Was 'Here Comes The Sun' used on films or YT videos a couple times recently?

No. We don’t only get our music through YouTube or movies you know. :)

Here Comes the Sun has always been one of their most popular songs. Y’all act like we’re talking about Hey Bulldog here or something. This isn’t exactly an obscure song.

Sorry, I was writing straight out of my head.
What I meant is it maybe could've come from some kind of 'hype' somewhere.
I should stop my brain fart then (I have to go to bed in a minute anyway).^^

I'm glad that the Millennial generation is digging anything by the Beatles. A lovely melody, a little sunshine, a little joy, what's not to like? :)

"Wondrous is our great blue ship
That sails around the mighty Sun
And Joy to everyone that rides along!"

  15. It’s a great song, who cares? As long as they can relate to it.

Yes, it is. We’ve always liked the Beatles and we continue to like them. :)

Incidentally, 65% of people listening to the Beatles on Spotify are under 25, so it turns out the generation after us digs them too.

Reminds me of Geoff Baker's statement when "Real Love" was released: "We carried out research after the Anthology was launched and this revealed that 41% of the buyers were teenagers."

It's true, but my guess is it was bought mostly by first or second generation fans.

We should consider that many people who listen to music via Spotify and other streaming services do not choose specific songs but rather rely on what others have selected and included on playlists. Therefore no Spotify statistics really show which songs are truly more preferred.

Many years ago, a guy who was about 20 years younger than me -- a tough, cynical brawling type of guy -- was talking to me at a restaurant when "Here Comes the Sun" came on over the music feed. Out of nowhere, he said, "When I hear the Beatles, it makes me feel like a kid again."

I think that's the appeal of the song -- and the Beatles in general. In an age of runaway snark and cynicism, their big, bright, joyous sound still cuts through the crap. :)

  25. This is the silliest line in the OPs opening :

There just seems to be a lack of historical awareness here which is annoying.

Musical should be firstly be enjoyable to the listener and not an hostile artifact imho
