I like the Sessions version a lot better than the CD version with Lucinda and David Crosby. At the time the show aired I had heard a few Whiskeytown cuts on the radio and wasn't blown away or anything. But Adams really did nail it on the tribute broadcast.

Well, WFUV has played the Beck and Hynde/Harris tracks a lot over the past couple of years—probably as much as any other tracks on the disc—so I'm clearly in the minority in disliking them.

Agreed. A great album opener. Maybe Neil should have collaborated with them instead of Pearl Jam...

I forgot that one! That's another goodie.

In addition to Stay Awake, Hal Willner also produced That's The Way I Feel Now: A Tribute To Thelonious Monk. Some of the featured artists included Carla Bley, NRBQ, Donald Fagen, Dr. John, Todd Rundgren, Peter Frampton, Steve Kahn and Bobby McFerrin. Fitting its subject, it features some fine & often quirky performances.

I'm not a Grateful Dead fan, but I really liked the tribute album, DEADICATED. The songs inevitably come from WORKINGMAN'S DEAD or AMERICAN BEAUTY, and for those of us who without the patience for "Dark Star" or Jerry Garcia's creaky voice, it did show off a solid songwriting catalog.

    1. Bertha - Los Lobos
    2. Jack Straw - Bruce Hornsby & The Range
    3. U.S. Blues - The Harshed Mellows
    4. Ship Of Fools - Elvis Costello
    5. China Doll - Suzanne Vega
    6. Cassidy - Suzanne Vega
    7. Truckin' - Dwight Yoakam
    8. Casey Jones - Warren Zevon/David Landley
    9. Uncle John's Band - The Indigo Girls
    10. Friend Of The Devil - Lyle Lovett
    11. To Lay Me Down - Cowboy Junkies
    12. Wharf Rat - Midnight Oil
    13. Estimated Prophet - Burning Spear
    14. Deal - Dr. John
    15. Ripple - Jane's Addiction

Only 5 of the 15 come from one of those two albums.

I'll second "If I were a Carpenter." Great, surprising mix of artists and interpretations of the songs.

The Freddie Mercury Tribute, which has so far been only released (in its original form) on LaserDisc, is superb.

Def Leppard, Metallica, Guns'n Roses, Extreme, George Michael, Elton John, Roger Daltrey, Lisa Stansfield, David Bowie, Annie Lennox, Paul Young, Mott the Hoople and many more artists singing Queen's hits.

I was in London during that concert. I thought about going... then thought "nah". I merely bought the HRC commemorative t-shirt.

Boy, was I a doofus back then. ;)

Stone Free: A Tribute to Jimi Hendrix, is pretty good, if you can get past the horrible version of Crosstown Traffic by Living Colour. They pulled a dracula and sucked the life out of that song!

Has anyone ever done a full remake of an existing album, such as Sgt. Pepper from start to finish? That would be a tribute album, wouldn't it?

    One more not listed:

    Timeless: Hank Williams Tribute

I personally really like Keith Richards' cover of "You Win Again", though I think a few reviewers disagree. There are some other great covers here as well.

The "Not so bright side of the moon", by The Squirrels.

    It's actually fun!

The satiric rock group Big Daddy recorded a song-for-song cover of Sgt. Pepper. Worth hearing!

I liked the Tribute to Curtis Mayfield. Bruce Springsteen - Gypsy Woman, Steve Winwood - It's Allright, Lenny Kravitz - Billy Jack, Rod Steward - People Get Ready and even Curtis Mayfield does his own Let's do it Again!

Bang On The Can's remake of Brian Eno's "Music for Airports" is a great one.

Yeah but Jeff Beck and Seals killer version of "Manic Depression" just takes the cake!
In fact out of all the 60's guitar hero's, Beck live(Who I've seen 1/2 dozen times since the late 70's) is the probably the most like Hendrix - just a very inventive and very, very physical player!!!

Actually I like Rhino's excellent "Cover Me' better than either one of the recent Mojo Springsteen vols. - Just contains the bigger, more familiar hit version of Springsteen written tunes - Fire - Pointer Sisters; Because The Night - Pattie Smith; The excellent trio of Talk to Me, Fever and Hearts of Stone- Southside Johnnie and Jukes; This Little Girl - Gary US Bonds; Johnny 99 - JR Cash; REndeviuosu - Greg Kihn; From Small Things (Big Things One Day Come) - Dave Edmunds

The only biggy I really miss is "Blinded By The Light" Manfred Man - But the long version of this can be found on Steve's excellent sounding - Suddenly 70's R&T Comp!

That one just KILLS! JB is insane, and Seal's voice is perfect. Paul Rodgers and Slash do a nice I Don't Live Today as well. I think other than Living Color, and The Cure (who picked them?), it's really good.

Here's another goody: TURBAN RENEWAL - A Tribute to Sam the Sham & the Pharoahs.

Damned thing was hard to find when it was IN print - I think it's OOP now.

That's what Brand New Boots and Panties is: the exact same tracks as the Ian Dury original, but done by different artists.

A Tribute to The Music Of Joseph Spence

I'd never heard of the guy before I heard this. Great album.

"Bonograph: Sonny Gets his Share", which is obviously a tribute to the late Mr. Bono. They really should have stopped making tribute albums after this one, as it can't be topped. Worth the price of admission just to hear two of the Smithereens do "You Better Sit Down, Kids".

I like some of the clever titles they come up with for the tributes. One of my all-time favorites (title-wise) is The Song Retains The Name.

Big Daddy did the Sgt. Pepper album in its entirety, and it is great!!! Each song is performed in the style of another artist, such as Buddy Holly, etc. It was released on CD by Rhino, but I think it is long out of print.

In addition to the Sgt. Pepper tributes already mentioned, there were recent multi-artist tributes to Carole King's Tapestry (Tapestry Revisited: A Tribute to Carole King) and Fleetwood Mac's Rumours (Legacy: A Tribute to Fleetwood Mac's Rumours).

The Tapestry tribute was the source for Rod Stewart's version of "So far Away" that was all over the radio a few years ago.

    Regards,
