Dan Boeckner - Divine Fits, band w/Britt Daniel (Spoon) & Wolf Parade.
    Indie Rock.

Have gone to 3 interview clips w/him, on youtube, searching for correct pronunciation & still don't know (but, I may have found it; in link underneath others).
Foiled : He introduces himself as "Dan"!! And, that's some mouthful on his filmmaker friend!! o_O:eek: The only pronounceable name in the clip, for me, is Britt Daniel! :biglaugh:
Found a clip/still wouldn't endeavor!! - Can see why he just says "Dan"!!
Love interviews w/this guy...He's so interesting! One of my favorite webisodes of "What's In My Bag? Amoeba (record store)".
Divine Fits fantastic super-duo: 1 release "A Thing Called Divine Fits". Live KEXP link below interview.

Co burn - that's how I've heard it pronounced. If you were being serious, that is. :)

I'm surprised to learn there's a Kink Kontroversy about this. The online pronunciation guides seem to be split - but not ambiguous. They tell you one or the other, but not both. Interviews I just sampled on YouTube have everybody, including Brits, saying Davees. My anecdotal testimony is that where I spent my teens, in England, the Davies I knew were mostly Daveeses. The town was Shrewsbury. Um, sometimes pronounced Shrowsbury.

Well I guess we'll need a runoff election to decide this. If nothing else it validates my asking the question:laugh:.

I'm going to keep saying "AIR-ista" in my mind, as I always have.

Now on to Chrysalis Records. I used to think it was pronounced "cry-SAL-iss", but then I heard someone smart say the word, and it was "CRISS-uh-liss".

I present this as a public service.

As long as we're on record labels, how about Reprise? Is it Reh-PREES or REE-pryse or Ree-PRYSE?

Quite recently, I read that Spencer Davis changed his name at the beginning of his career -- it was originally Davies, but he knew Americans would mispronounce that as "Davees", so he changed the spelling to Davis.

Well I know this will only confuse you since you've been told otherwise, but I read in a book that it's pronounced 'ruh-PRIZE'. The author noted the irony of it sounding like 'reprisal', given Sinatra's supposed mob connections.

    So that's clear as mud.

I can't remember which promo it was, but I've heard it pronounced "Reh-PREES" on one of the label's radio spots. So I'd say the author you reference was wrong.

That's interesting - and slightly funny. His real problem was not people mispronouncing his name, but them thinking it belonged to Stevie Winwood.

I didn’t even think about that.

I always thought it was the middle syllable - a-wrist-a - but I know a former promo guy from Arista and he pronounced it as "air-ista". I assumed he was just screwing with me (he pronounced words wrong on purpose) until we played an Arista promo interview record (the Church Sum of The Parts) and the host pronounced it the same way (AIR-ista) within the first five seconds. But that doesn't necessarily mean that the Arista employee knew how to pronounce it...!

I've heard it pronounced with the emphasis on the first syllable since 1975, when I first heard advertising for Barry Manilow albums.

Another record label with a murky pronunciation, at least to moderns, is the old 78 rpm label Vocalion.

I've always pronounced it "vo CAL yun" (rhymes with "stallion") -- which I think is correct -- but I've also heard it as "vo kuh LIE un" (like "vocal lion" with one L missing).
