Billy Idol definitely had the Elvis vibe going on. I still have his records that I bought in the 1980s.
The Clash “1977” “No Elvis, Beatles, or The Rolling Stones” Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds The Firstborn is Dead “The album's name is a reference to Jesse Garon Presley, the stillborn identical twin of Elvis Presley.”
It took a while for me to get past the whole "masked reborn Elvis" gimmick of Orion (Jimmy Ellis) but this song is what probably what helped. Although it's clearly not Elvis Presley singing, I remember lots of radio play of this at Christmas time. I think the DJs got a kick out of folks requesting that newly released Elvis Christmas song. Released in 1979, I've always had this song in my personal Christmas rotation since then. It's clearly not Elvis Presley singing but I still enjoy it. "Remember Bethlehem" by Orion (Jimmy Ellis).

That’s a popular misconception, but the lyrics were written by Tom Brown and describe his meeting with Gram Parsons, so Parsons himself is actually the “king” in question in the song.
That makes some sense especially given when Gram Parsons passed away. I would think that to those on the outside, Elvis had a squeaky clean image until the mid 1970s when it came to amphetamine use.
