Pick an artist, how many albums did it take for them to make one that wasn't great or better than? If they're simply a band you don't like, don't mention them. No point in mentioning ones you never think got to the point of greatness. Likewise, no point in mentioning an artist that never did no wrong!

The Kinks: 2 albums (Starting with Kinda Kinks)

Yes: 2 albums (Time and a Word)

Pink Floyd: 3 albums (Ummagumma, I still like it though)

Black Sabbath: 3 albums (Master of Reality, only good not great, or exceptional like their previous. Might change my mind the more I listen to it.)

Bob Marley (& the Wailers, starting from Catch a Fire): 3 albums (Natty Dread)

Cream: 5 albums (Live Cream, Vol. 1)

The Doors: 7 albums (Other Voices)

    R.E.M. - 5 albums: Document
The Monkees - 2 albums: More Of The Monkees
The Clash - 5 albums: Combat Rock
    U2 - 8 albums: Zooropa

    Starting with some favorites:
The Rolling Stones: I would say the rot started setting in with Emotional Rescue (18th album)

Van Halen- none, all seven are great!

Frank Zappa/The Mothers Pf Invention: I think Chunga’s Revenge isn’t bad but overall comes off as a hodge podge and a notable step down compared to everything before it. (10th album)

Led Zeppelin: In Through The Out Door (8th album)

The Stooges: The Weirdness (4th album)

Little Feat: Shake Me Up (10th album)

Black Sabbath: Technical Ecstasy (7th album)

King Crimson: The ConstruKction Of Light (12th album)

    Ramones: Animal Boy (9th album)

AC/DC: Fly On The Wall (9th album)

The Beach Boys: Thing is, those first three or so albums have a lot of filler on them, so I don’t know.

Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band: Well, I can point to Unconditionally Guaranteed (7th album)

    Rush: Power Windows (11th album)

    KISS: Unmasked (8th album)

Aerosmith: Done With Mirrors (8th album)

    Primus: Antipop (6th album)

The Cars: Heartbeat City (5th album)

Shameless mention of an artist that never did wrong (since they're a nominee for the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame):

    Thin Lizzy

Name first album you don't like by a list of people's favourite bands. No thanks - honesty does not always pay.

Suffice to say that people so far are being very generous with their assessments. Cf. Talking Heads, Zappa and Beefheart.

If you discount Utopia, then Todd Rundgren: The Ever Popular Tortured Artist Effect (10th solo album)
If you count Utopia, then Oops! Wrong Planet (11th TR or TR/Utopia album)

I prefer more positive 'games', but this isn't so negative so as to be dismissive of what other people like, well, at least I don't feel like it is anyway, because you're not writing off the band, just an album or so, and even then you don't have to dislike it, just think it's a big enough of a drop off from their previous to have it be worth the mention.

Elvis - 9th album ‘goodbye cruel world ‘

Beatles - 2nd album ‘with the beatles’

Thankfully both of them returned to form with their next records.

Someone who thinks Please Please Me is great but not With the Beatles? Interesting! I mean I get it, but I would presume most people would think similarly about both.

I’m not afraid to be different! For me, Please Please Me has an energy that the follow up just lacks. It has always sounded weak to my ears.

    Fair enough :)
I love both, but Please Please Me's the easy winner for me too.

I'd probably have to say Night in the Ruts is less than great. Done With Mirrors is probably less than great overall too, but at times it's actually really excellent.

seriously ?? Presence was 1st 'less-than-great' Zep. album in my book so that's 7 albums....PG on the other hand is a stone cold classic anyway you slice it.

Not for me. I don't find the riffs, the melodies or the production to be as good or memorable as previous albums, and I love those previous albums. It's a good album, but I don't think it's great.

neil young - are you passionate? - it took 32 years.
chicago - 13 - 'hot streets' was not terrible, '13' was the big change.
fleetwood mac - say you will - not so much for the material, but for the horrible sound they had to approve before the release.
joni mitchell - mingus - just too different
